I've been meaning to ask this question for a long time.
Does anyone have an explanation, table, or link for me about the different oil approvals?
I'm not quite following this: VW standard 50x xx and you didn't see it.
Actually, as far as I know, only PD (oil) is available as an extra option. On the other hand, I don't understand why 'PDi' oil is used in our SDI models. For example, I can't find any full synthetic oil from Castrol that is suitable for PD engines, which is strange.
I hope this question isn't disruptive, or if it has been asked before. icon_redface.gif

We've already had enough of these oil discussions! How about using the search function and reading, reading, reading, for a change? It certainly won't make you any less knowledgeable! Check your owner's manual; it will tell you what kind of oil to use! Also, it makes a difference whether the vehicle has a 'long-life' oil system or not.

Castrol likely offers a fully synthetic PD oil, but not in hardware stores, which I agree with. They do have a partially synthetic oil that meets the VW 505 01 standard available there.

Full synthetic Castrol oils:
Castrol FORMULA RS 0W-40
Castrol FORMULA RS RACING SYNTEC SAE 10W-60.

"Prominently displayed on the VW approvals homepage are the specifications 502 00/505 00."
Since I don't have access to the product documentation, I don't know what kind of approval it has.

Since I don't have his PD, I don't know what clearance he has.

'Look, and that's exactly the problem! 502 00 and 505 00 are not suitable for PD! You need something like 505 01 or 506 01!'

Okay, I didn't know that as written before.
Castrol offers a top-up oil for this.
Castrol LongLife 2 TOPUP for VW 506 01.
and
Castrol GTD 505 01 TOPUP for VW 505 01.
