I have a Golf IV (Mk4) from the year 2000 with a Multi Function Display (MFD). I'm not able to see the oil temperature on my MFD. Is it possible to unlock this feature, or do I need to install an oil temperature sensor?

Regards,
Benjamin.

I think you can probably forget about that without incurring significant financial costs. At least, that's what I tried once, and I gave up. However, I would still appreciate any information you can provide that is relatively inexpensive.

I was once interested in that.

zusatzinstrumente.de

However, it's quite expensive.

Hmmm, you could also simply replicate that. You just need to log the data on the CAN bus from the radio to the instrument cluster.
Is anyone interested in starting such a project (with me)?

But still: with standard MFA, I believe it's possible to activate the oil temperature display through coding, right?

Benjamin.

That sounds like a good idea. I think I would enjoy working on a project like that. Unfortunately, I haven't had the time for something like that so far.

Let me know if you find anything out.

Matthias.

I'm already messing around with CAN (because I'm trying to flash the EDV16...), so disabling logging shouldn't be a problem.

I could figure out the protocol, but it would be great if someone could help program the firmware for the display controller... Or even the hardware layout (ADCs, PC interface, etc.).

Benjamin.

Hello professionals!

Is it really possible to display the oil temperature on the MFA display by reprogramming? I have a 2002 T4 speedometer with MFA, and the oil temperature would be very interesting, especially now that winter is coming (cold starts).

Greetings, Peter.

I haven't figured it out yet, but it must be possible, because according to AKTE, there isn't a separate part number for instrument clusters for vehicles with an oil temperature sensor...

Could someone possibly read the oil temperature sensor code from the engine control unit (ECU) and also the coding of its corresponding fuse box module?

Benjamin.

Hello,

There is no Golf IV model that has an oil temperature display in the Multifunction Display (MFA), and therefore it cannot be activated or hidden.
The topic has been discussed countless times before.
It's just not working.

However, I'm also open to being proven wrong, as I also want to be right.

Okay, so it's now clear that we need to build an additional device that transmits the sensor data via CAN to the instrument cluster, so that it can be displayed in the navigation area, like on www.zusatzinstrumente.de.
I'm just surprised that the Golf IV still uses a PIN code for accessing the oil temperature display on the instrument cluster.

Benjamin.

Fast jeder hat doch einen Außentemperaturgeber. Man könnte doch wahlweise, durch einen Umschalter einen Öltempgeber oder den Außentempgeber auf den Eingang des Kombis geben. Und aware.

I'm just a little surprised that even in the Golf IV, there's still a PIN for the oil temperature sensor on the instrument cluster....

All models with longlife service intervals have a combined oil level/oil temperature sensor.
It can be read out in these models from the measurement blocks within the instrument cluster.
It is not possible to display data from the sensor in the MFA (Multi-Function Display). Similarly, direct connection to the sensor is not possible because it is a self-contained, intelligent sensor.

Previous models sometimes had oil temperature indicators, and this feature has been retained to this day.

How does the instrument cluster receive the oil temperature signal, via CAN bus or directly through an analog connection?

Benjamin.

Hello!

On my T4, ACV model year 2000, the MFA (Multifunction Display) has the following functions:

Outdoor temperature displayed in the lower half of the screen (also shown in the central display).
Average consumption.
Current consumption.
Driving time.
Average speed.

"But there's no oil temperature reading??? According to other T4 drivers, it should be displayed."

I would like to have those. Perhaps the instrument cluster is just incorrectly coded? The current coding is: 08111.

Sure, please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English. I will only provide the translation.

VW has three different instrument clusters (also known as dashboards).
- Low-profile version with tachometer and digital clock.
- Midline version with tachometer and multifunction display.
- Highline version with tachometer, multifunction display, and navigation display unit.

In the 1999/2000 model years, ALL vehicles from Volkswagen were switched to the new CAN-BUS system.
This is a bus system that is used for data transmission between the control units.
which also includes the KI (combination instrument).

To determine whether a Midline MFA or a Highline MFA is installed,
Looking at the upper half of the display in the center of the instrument cluster...
If you see symbols (airbag, handbrake, etc.), then you are simply looking at the standard MFA (Multi-Function Display).
The difference between Midline and Highline MFA can also be seen on the back of the AI device:
On the right and left sides, you can see a 32-pin connector each.
If there is an additional 20-pin connector in the center, it indicates a Highline instrument cluster (with navigation).
It's best to find the pin configuration of the control unit (old/new) using a wiring diagram.

AI part number breakdown:
The first 3 characters represent the model:
7D0 xxx xxx = T4

The middle three characters represent the control command.
xxx 919 xxx = WITHOUT CAN-Bus (up to model year 2000).
xxx 920 xxx = Compatible with CAN-Bus (from model year 2000 onwards).

The last three digits indicate the features.
xxx xxx 8xx = Display in km/h.
xxx xxx 9xx = Display in mph.

It appears that in the T4 AI, the second-to-last position is reserved for the tachograph code.
7D0 920 80x = Lowline version.
7D0 920 82x = Midline version.
7D0 920 84x = Highline version.

There is no clear correspondence for the last digit, as it is referred to differently in the various model years.
(Please note: The last two digits are subject to change without notice.)

AI coding:
Everything is beeping and flashing after the new instrument cluster was connected.
That's normal; many functions may be activated that haven't yet been connected or disabled through diagnostics.

In order to operate the AI correctly, various additional functions need to be activated or deactivated.
The adjustments are performed using VAG-COM (on VW/Audi devices with VAS 1551 and 5051/52).

Here are only the most important AI settings via VAG-COM:
Select STG 17 (combination instrument).
STG Coding -> Function 07.

Encoding number (example): 04142
The first two digits of the code indicate the extra options.

00 - no extra options.
+01 - Brake pad wear indicator active.
+02 - Seatbelt warning indicator active.
+04 - Windshield washer fluid level warning indicator active.
icon_smile_thumb_up.gif6 - Navigation active.

Error code (example): 22142 (modified with VAG-COM).
Instead of just displaying the windshield washer fluid level, the system now also includes navigation and seatbelt warning indicators (02+04+16=22).

The third code position is responsible for country selection.
1 - Rest of the world (24-hour clock)
2 - USA (12:00 PM)
3 - Canada (12:00 PM)
4 - UK (24-hour clock)
5 - Japan
6 - Saudi Arabia
7 - Australia

The fourth digit in the code indicates the engine variant:
3 - No service intervals (2002+).
4 - 4-cylinder (1999-2001)
5 - 5-cylinder (1999-2001)
6 - 6-cylinder (1999-2001)

The fifth code position indicates the distance indicator.
1 - 4345
2 - 3528
3 - 4134
4 - 3648 (2002+)

Set or change the language of the AI (Highline MFA).

Select the STG 17 combination instrument.
Adjusting the ECU -> Function 10 -> Channel 4.

Select language:
00001 - English (English)
00002 - English (English)
00003 - French (Französisch)
00004 - Italian (Italian)
00005 - Spanish (Spanish)
00006 - Portuguese (Portuguese)

Set service interval display.
Finally, you can adjust the service interval display.

Select the STG 17 combination instrument.
Adjusting the ECU -> Function 10.

The values indicate the time or distance until the next inspection. If a smaller value is desired,
Simply subtract the value from the normal value (e.g., 00009 for an inspection due at 9000 km).

-> Channel 10 ("OIL" message)
The new adjustment value is "00015" for inspections every 15,000 km. This value is specified in units of 1,000 km (15 x 1,000 = 15,000 km).

-> Channel 11 ("INSP 01" message)
The new adjustment value is "00030" for inspections every 30,000 km. This value is specified in increments of 1,000 km (30 x 1,000 = 30,000 km).

-> Channel 10 ("INSP 02" message)
The new adjustment value is "00036" for the annual inspection, and it is specified in increments of 10 days (36 x 10 = 360 days).

Best regards, Peter.
