Fuel gauge and speedometer not working

My friend's A4 TDI, manufactured in 2002, had been sitting idle for two weeks. When he drove off yesterday, he noticed that the speedometer, just like the fuel gauge, was no longer working.

What could that be? Can someone help?

It can be many things!

A few more details would be helpful.
- What has already been checked? (at least the fuse?)
- What else is affected? (especially by those consumers who are connected to the same circuit breaker)
- Is it a permanent error, or a temporary, one-time occurrence?

Without further information, I can offer two (completely unnecessary) tips:
- Fuse
- or a broken cable.

Do you happen to know if the fuel gauge and speedometer are connected to the same fuse?

The light of the instrument cluster is fused together with the instrument lighting and the license plate light (fuse number 3).
Don't think you'll find a fuse for the functions of the combination instrument. However, I'm not entirely sure. I suspect there might be a problem with the connection. Cable break.

There's no separate fuse for it; it's made up of a large circuit board. Connect a VAG Com and see what error codes it throws. But if you don't have a knack for electronics, like I do, then I'm afraid things might go badly for you!

But here's a tip: Once, a cheeky rodent gnawed on my tachometer signal cable... it's worth taking a look! It doesn't explain the fuel gauge because the cables are routed within the car.
