Oil Pan Removal: How-To Guide

Hello,

I'm having a problem with a Passat Variant B5, manufactured in 1998, with engine code AFN.
The oil pan gasket is leaking, and now the oil pan needs to be removed.
However, there's a problem: the axle runs underneath the oil pan. It can't be that we have to remove the axle or lift the engine so high that we can remove the oil pan.
The REP guidelines do not mention anything about expansion.
Does anyone have any advice?

I don't know how it is with your Passat, but with my old one (a 1985 TD), the axle had to be removed because the engine was installed longitudinally. In your case .

Yes, that's right. In the B5, the engine is also mounted longitudinally, whereas in the B4, it was mounted transversely. That made it easier to remove the engine in the B4.
