Hello,
My Mondeo Diesel - 1.8l turbodiesel, manufactured in late 96, experiences a significant loss of power at low engine speeds. On the highway, you barely notice any changes, the top speed remains the same, but every stoplight start is a small drama.
The engine has a mileage of approximately 120,000 km. At the Ford workshop, I had a new air filter (Euro 50) installed, but it did not result in any improvement. Before I waste any more time in the workshop, I'd like to get some tips and opinions on the possible causes.
Here are the symptoms again:
- Low power up to 3,500 RPM
- Turbo effect reduced and shifted to higher RPMs
- Increased consumption
- Powerful Russian engine during acceleration (almost always using full throttle, as otherwise it doesn't go very well)
- at lower speeds, the engine makes a different noise, a 'hissing' - 'clicking' - 'chirping' sound, up to approximately 2500 RPM
- The car had a service with belt replacement at 110,000 km, but the injectors have not yet been replaced.
Does anyone have a similar problem or can offer tips on possible causes?

Hello Thomas,
What kind of turbocharger do you have?
A possible cause could be a sticking wastegate or a stuck VTG (Wastegate Temperature Gauge) adjustment.
Or a leak in the boost pressure system, for example, due to a crack in a hose, which causes the air supplied by the turbocharger to escape instead of entering the engine.
This would also explain the chirping sounds.

Subject: FORD 1.8 TD - Performance loss in the lower RPM range
Hi,
I'm experiencing a noticeable performance loss in my FORD 1.8 TD at lower engine speeds. {PROBLEM_DESCRIPTION}
Specifically, {SPECIFIC_EXAMPLE}
I've checked the following:
* {CHECKED_ITEM_1}
* {CHECKED_ITEM_2}
* {CHECKED_ITEM_3}
All of these items appear to be in good working order.
Could you please advise on what might be causing this?
Thanks,

Hello, I had the same symptoms on my Mondo. In my case, it was a damaged air intake. It was torn on the bottom, about 120 mm in diameter. You should also be able to find the engine oil around and on the turbocharger, just like I can.
Best regards, René |
