Hello!

I'm brand new to this forum, and I've tried using the search function... Maybe I entered the wrong keywords, because I can't imagine that I'm the only person in the world with this problem.
I would, of course, be grateful for any suggestions regarding other topics!

So...

Audi A6 (C4) 2.5 TDI with the 5-cylinder 140 hp engine...

I was planning to get 5 new glow plugs before winter, since two of them were already defective... so I took out the old ones and put in the new ones.

There are no problems with the outer cylinders. However, the middle one is quite obstructed by fuel injection lines.
Using a socket wrench, I was able to reach the spark plug, but I discovered that either the previous owner or some workshop had either installed the spark plug at an angle, too tightly, or too loosely.
'Anyway, now the hexagonal part and the inner part of the candle are not rotating. The hexagonal part is sheared off approximately at the second thread from the top.'

What do I do now???

I haven't started the engine yet, but I suspect that the remaining part of the thread, along with the glow plug and the sealing surface, is still firmly seated in the cylinder head. Therefore, the head should be sealed.

Can/should I drive like this for now...? What are the possible solutions? Does the head need to be removed to fix it?

I would really appreciate any answers, I'm quite desperate... it happened about an hour ago, and Google led me to this great forum icon_smile.gif.

'Thank you!'

Regards,
Malte.

Hello Malte,

The simplest solution is probably to leave the spark plug in. In very cold temperatures below -5 degrees Celsius, the engine will start somewhat roughly and produce white smoke.

Best regards,
Albrecht.

Hello Malte,
Did you manage to remove the other four spark plugs cleanly and put them back in properly?

If so, isolate the connection of the missing glow plug and proceed with four.
Even with intact candles, the process should continue smoothly. You shouldn't experience any starting problems, even in cold weather.
to have.
To replace the spark plug, it probably requires removing the head.
It might be worth considering installing a used parking heater (available on eBay).

Best regards, Rudi.

Hi,

I'm having a similar problem. Three out of the four candles came out easily, but the last one looked worn out beforehand, so I left it for now. However, I noticed that the area around it is quite waxy. Now I'm wondering if there's a way to remove the candle without too much effort. Maybe someone knows a trick or something...
Best regards,
Tim.

Hello everyone,

I can't make a definitive statement about the question, but the topic is generally quite relevant: I'm currently considering buying a new set of glow plugs for my car. In this forum, http://www.dieselsend.de is mentioned, among other things. There, you can find glow plugs from Bosch for €78 or from Herzog for around €35 for a set of 5. Are there such significant quality differences, or what experiences have you had with these?

Hello Thomas,

While I can't offer you years of experience with Herzog spark plugs, I can say that the quality isn't bad.
I installed a new set of DieselSend glow plugs for the first time at the beginning of this month because three out of the four were already dead. The quality of the replacement parts isn't bad, but it's too early to say anything about their lifespan. Before installing them, I checked and compared them as best as I could (comparing OLD Bosch parts with NEW DieselSend parts).

The result was plausible and as expected.

'The internal resistance, load current, and preheating time (measured cold and hot) were slightly worse in the old Bosch glow plugs compared to the new Herzog ones. Of course, it's difficult to compare old and new parts. I just wanted to confirm that the new Herzog glow plugs are not inferior to the old Bosch ones.'

I'm curious to see how long these inexpensive Herzog glow plugs will last.
The price was attractive, and if it lasts more than half the lifespan of a Bosch product, then it's definitely worth it.
The focus was on the desire to experiment, not the price!

Best regards, Georg.

"That's definitely not good. If it's greasy, something is likely leaking from the cylinder. If the threads are sheared off or damaged from repeated tightening and loosening, you have limited options. Every attempt to fix it will inevitably introduce debris into the combustion chamber, which won't be good. The best solution, even though it's complicated, is to remove the cylinder head and repair it. Otherwise, if there's no leak in the combustion chamber, as mentioned before, just keep driving!"

@ Georg-TDI,

The issue has been resolved since this morning. I got a price quote from our company, and they're even offering the Bosch spark plugs for a bit less than the price from Dieselsend. When you add in the shipping costs, the difference isn't that significant anymore, so I decided to go with the Bosch ones and ordered a total of 5. I'm now just curious about any potential installation or removal difficulties. At the same time, the car is getting a new battery and a transmission oil change. I just wanted to do something good for the diesel engine, given its mileage (and to be able to go on a ski trip in January without getting stranded).

Regards,
Thomas.
