Hello everyone,
I've really searched the entire website, but unfortunately, I couldn't find anything on this topic. So, I've created a new topic. Hoping that I was right.
Okay, let's get to the problem:
I have a Golf 3 GTD with an intercooler, oil cooler, and a modified fuel injection pump. So far, so good. The problem is that when I drive at full throttle on the highway, my speedometer indicates a top speed of around 200 km/h. However, according to the tachometer, the engine is running in the 'red zone.' What is not good.
Okay, I've been thinking about whether I should buy a longer 5th gear and install it. I know that such things exist. However, I'm not sure if it would be beneficial, and if so, how much of a difference it would make. Also, I'm not sure how difficult it is to install a 5th gear. 'I'm planning to rebuild the gearbox and I'm wondering where I can find a replacement set of gears.'
I hope you can help me.
Thank you.
Regards,
Volkswagen Golf 3 GTD.
Year of manufacture: 1993.

Replacing the gears might be worthwhile for relatively new vehicles. Since you'll likely only be getting new gears, it's probably more cost-effective to buy a used transmission with the desired configuration from a junkyard.
The search function returns exactly four results when you search for "GKB" and select the category "Fachartikel" (technical articles). One of them lists all the transmission identification letters and their corresponding translations.
This should make it clear which gear your transmission is in for each speed.
Another search result will show you which transmissions were used in combination with specific vehicle engines.
Compare that to a transmission from, for example, the 1Z or AHU engine, or the AFN engine, and compare it to your transmission. There's bound to be something in there that's right for you.
I would guess that you'll get the best performance with the ASD enabled.
Regards,
Guste. |

Here's another tip:
Don't let anyone sell you "just any TDI transmission," because at least the ones from the 1Z engine in the standard Golf and the Variant are sometimes significantly different.
The Variant has a CTN that is 4-14% shorter than the one on the standard 1Z (which should be the ASD).
However, the variant also has larger tires.

Hi,
"Ask someone named 'Ulli S.' in this forum; he drives (as far as I remember) a 1.6 GTD with a CYP TDI transmission." Gruß Bertil

Enjoy your meal!
I'm driving a second-generation Golf with a CTN exhaust system on an AAZ engine, it's amazing!
Since I haven't installed a working tachometer yet, I can't...
The RPMs don't tell the whole story; theoretically, at 4000 RPM in 5th gear, you'd be going 180 km/h.
Definitely worth recommending, just for the soundscape.
At AAZ, besides a small language model (LLM), not much has been done yet, but it can handle longer translations.
but without any problems.
Problem with this: Cable-driven mechanisms -> Requires tinkering and customization instead of being plug-and-play.

Volkswagen Golf 2 - AAZ engine - CTN transmission.
That's a mixed collection of parts from various brands within the VAG Group.
The AAZ was never available in the Golf 2, and the CTN was not compatible with the AAZ.

"You're right, it's a colorful mix."
The AAZ was involved in a traffic accident with a known history.
The JR engine in the IIer model started consuming oil gradually around 320,000 km.
and I installed the CTN transmission because the 4-speed transmission on the JR felt too short.
Mixed in with everything else is a gasoline starter motor that is slowly reaching its limits.
coming, and eventually I'll add an ABS system from a...
Passat, year of manufacture '95, with brake system from a Golf II 16V.
You need to find something to keep you busy, after all...

Once you've finished working on the car, take it for an inspection and secretly film it... to see if they notice anything. Just kidding, of course.
"Did you register the AAZ engine? Just out of curiosity, we still have a Type II Syncro here that blew two pistons, and we also have a new AAZ engine lying around. Reading this, I can imagine a great winter car." He even has ABS! |

The AAZ is registered; the process was quite straightforward, and that was the only thing they required.
It was a noise measurement.
I've also considered synchronizing the TD motor before, but the problem back then was that the TÜV (German technical inspection authority) wouldn't approve it.
(from someone other than the AAZ entry) Due to emissions regulations, the engine can only be used with the specified components.
I wanted to enter the appropriate gearbox information, but that would have required quite a bit of modification.
I suspect there's something wrong with the differential or axle drive, but it seemed too complicated to fix, and besides...
I didn't have the time or the space.
With the original. "You won't be happy with a synchronized gearbox; it's usually even shorter than..."
the 2WD gasoline transmissions.
Possibly, there might be a longer version of the 35i with a separate connection to the rear axle.
Inspection at VW ?
At most, only the spare parts expert will notice the new and expensive shift actuator standing out.

Yes, yes, the issue with the transmission is a problem. Let's see how we can work around this, but I think I'll also lack the motivation. |
