Hello,
'I'm experiencing a very unpleasant noise (whistling, howling...) in my Octavia, especially at low RPMs or when coasting. I suspect it's coming from the differential. Does anyone else experience this noise? Or does anyone have any ideas about what it might be? (I'm planning to take it to a workshop soon, so I'd appreciate hearing other opinions so I don't get dismissed with responses like 'It's normal' or 'We've never seen that before.')'
Best regards, cdl. |

Hello cdl!
Can you please provide more specific details about your vehicle?
- Engine identification code
- Gearbox code (also found in the service booklet)
- Mileage
Is it more of a low-frequency sound (grinding) or a high-frequency sound (singing)?
Does the noise occur when driving straight, or only when turning?
Is the noise noticeable in all gears, possibly also when the clutch is depressed or when the transmission is in neutral (i.e., the vehicle is rolling without power being transmitted to the engine)?
Have you checked the transmission fluid level?
If you answer the questions above, it will make the remote diagnosis much easier!

Hello, since I don't have the vehicle documents available at the moment, here's some preliminary information:
- Skoda Octavia TDI, 96 kW, year of manufacture: 07.2003, 6-speed gearbox, mileage: 5000.
The noise has been present from the beginning. It can be heard when releasing the accelerator pedal at low speeds. However, when accelerating, there is no noise. Additionally, the 'howling' sound can be altered or eliminated by lightly applying the brakes. I already have a suspicion about what it might be, but I would still like to hear other opinions on the matter, so that I am well-prepared for a complaint.
Best regards, cdl. |

 Hi everyone,
The 'differential noises' on my Octavia are finally gone. How? After visiting several workshops without success, I printed out the A3 document 'Howling noises during operation' by Michael II and took it to the workshop. After a test drive and initial head-shaking, I told the service technician about the document. He promised me that he would take care of it. A few weeks later, I received a call with the happy news: 'This joint shaft was also installed in the Octavia.' 'I was asked to come by and have the wave replaced.'
It took 2 hours, was free, and was successful. Now driving is fun again.
Best regards, cdl. |
