Type designations?

Hello everyone.

It might be a bit off-topic, but I constantly wonder which engine is installed in a VW based on its emblem.
Do they do things at VW the same way they're currently finding those letters, or is there a transparent system in place?

e.g., for the Golf and Passat. Are they different there?
Please write down whatever comes to mind.

PS: By the way, I'm referring to the red letters on the tailgate. (One red, two red, green, yellow, blue, duck-pattern ).
