ESP and ASR: What They Are & How They Work

Hello,

Does a vehicle with ESP automatically have traction control? I don't think so. A colleague of mine claimed that our Golf 4 TDI models with ESP also had ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation), because he believed ASR is always included in ESP. However, I can't quite understand this, as wheel spin and even wheel hop seem to be no problem at all.

So, does having ESP automatically mean you also have ASR?

Generally speaking, you can't answer that question definitively. It likely depends on the specific vehicle or model.
In the case of the Golf D, the standard ESP (introduced since September 1999) always comes combined with ASR and ESD. In principle, ESP requires the most sophisticated sensor technology (gyroscope, steering angle sensor, etc.). ASR and ESD, on the other hand, can also function using the ABS sensor system and are essentially just a piece of additional software.

Okay, so the impression that the Golf 4 doesn't regulate traction when starting is probably because I have felt the ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) working quite noticeably in a BMW 3 series. But there is also significantly more power there .

Yes, it's already squealing. Also, the intervention of the traction control system (ASR) isn't quite as aggressive in the G4.

I wouldn't try to test the ABS on a dry road – it would be a waste of tires.

It's almost really winter... On snow (be careful... there's A LOT of space around you, so you don't slide into anything), just put it in second gear and floor the accelerator. My ASV with ASR then regulates itself with the TCS (Traction Control System - that's what Seat calls it) flashing wildly, engaging at around 1500 RPM and accelerating very gently.

Okay, you can only really let loose and have some fun with a VW Golf 4 if you disable the ESP (Electronic Stability Program).
