I find it amazing that a tuner would speak out SO strongly AGAINST sports air filters
CU Gremlin
They are absolutely right about that!
I have personally experienced in the development of internal combustion engines how significantly the air intake system, including the filter lines and mass airflow sensor (MAF), affects the air mass measurement and lambda control. In case of doubt, if the ducting is incorrectly routed, air will flow around the outside of the hot film element, and as a result, the engine management system will receive significantly less air mass.
Furthermore: With a turbocharged engine (especially a diesel), a performance air filter is almost pointless because the turbocharger almost compensates for the slightly higher pressure drop of a standard paper air filter.
I much prefer a verschandeln intake manifold (and therefore a longer engine life) to a few extra liters of air, which anyway can hardly be used for performance.
And the oil mist from such a filter can indeed quickly lead to premature failure of the mass airflow sensor.
By the way: I saw a customer service notice from VW regarding a goodwill replacement program for faulty mass airflow sensors (MAF sensors) on 1.9 TDI engines. It mentioned a 100% goodwill replacement, apparently up to 100,000 km and 2?? years, but only with regular maintenance inspections. Perhaps someone here knows more, otherwise I can inquire for more information about the goodwill arrangement if you're interested.
