Okay, I'm thinking again. Could you take the engine block from a 1Z, equip it with stronger pistons, and then use a large turbocharger (obviously a VTG), and achieve a significant power increase (around 150-160 horsepower)? Or is the 1Z engine block only capable of handling 90 horsepower? The fuel injectors would definitely need to be different (larger), and the fuel pump would also need to be modified (with a larger piston).

Best regards, WarLord.

The 1Z engine block is the same as the AFN. However, the AFN has everything else upgraded. Why don't you build an AFN with a VNT 17 turbocharger and 216 injectors and have it dyno-tuned? That way, you'll have something concrete. A friend of mine used to have an AFN with 165 horsepower. I think he had Rothe Motorsport tune it. It had a different exhaust system, a larger turbocharger, different injectors, and a second intercooler on the right side. All of that was dyno-tuned.
The acceleration was enormous. My chipped AFN engine, supposedly with 140 horsepower icon_rolleyes.gif, felt really slow.
That would be a good measure.
However, I don't think it's worthwhile or cost-effective to rebuild the 1Z engine.

Well, just putting in a chip would be too easy. No, it has to be something substantial and, above all, durable. What exactly is different about the AFN engine? Because, otherwise, there's still the possibility of simply installing the injectors, turbocharger, and engine control unit from an AFN, and then I would almost have an AFN engine.

Best regards, WarLord.

Why don't you try using AFN injectors and a tuned chip first?

Because I wouldn't have experienced the advantages of the VTG charger yet.

'Thanks, the middle link was helpful. So, it should work with the block and a strong crankshaft. Would the pistons and crankshaft from the 150 HP PD engine be suitable? It's still the same block from the 70s. Tuning the AFN engine sounds promising. I'd like to achieve 150 HP with it if I do a conversion like that (you always want to aim high). *g*'

YES AND NO! While the block is indeed an 827, the TDI is now 15mm taller than the "original" 827 from the 70s (since the AAZ engine). Furthermore, the material has been changed several times over the years.

So, the 1Z is already higher. Hmm, okay. What do you think, can I run the engine with 150 horsepower or more without being afraid that it will explode? Assuming I'm using different pistons, connecting rods, and crankshaft.

Best regards, WarLord.

Hi,

Even though the block for the 150 hp version is different, the most vulnerable parts are likely to be found among the moving components, such as the pistons, crankshaft, and connecting rods.
Based on my gut feeling, without any specific modifications, I'd estimate around 120-130 horsepower. If longevity isn't a concern, you could potentially add another 20-30 horsepower, but that would likely require a significant amount of work. That would involve classic tuning techniques: KW precision balancing, individually weighing connecting rods, and so on...

'Special measures? Another engine block then (with 150 hp from a PD TDI)? Is the crankshaft from the 150 hp TDI really that much better made?'

Best regards, WarLord.

If I understand correctly, considering the effort and money involved, you should be able to get a different car with more horsepower for that price!

But no Passat 35i. I don't want anything new.

The answer is obvious. Do you really think a manufacturer would use the same kilowatt (kW) rating for an engine producing 202 Nm (1Z) as it would for an engine producing 320 Nm (ARL)?

It will probably be made of a different material (harder). But imbalances only become relevant at high speeds (modified Cobra from Weineck: The crankshafts are re-ground there, and you can run with 10 liters of displacement at just under 9,100 RPM). Well, the crankshaft will also be installed.

But no Passat 35i. I don't want anything new.

Greetings, WarLord.

I highly doubt whether the 35i will be able to withstand the stresses, particularly in areas like the transmission, drive shafts, and brakes, in all aspects as originally planned. Of course, there's the VR6 engine. And yes, you can certainly reuse some parts from it. But it costs money and a huge amount of time! I wouldn't do it!
