Hi,

I had just changed the oil in my Golf 2 naturally aspirated diesel (year 1990) when a real waterfall of liquid started spraying out of the fuel injection pump. After removing the gas system, I could see that it was leaking heavily from the bearing bush. Therefore, I have the following questions: Is there an O-ring somewhere that I just need to replace? And do I have to open the pump to do that? The thought of doing that makes me a bit uneasy, I must say... What should I do? Can someone give me some tips?

Hi,

Chris.

Hi Chris,

"I'm familiar with this problem from my old Passat TD. You need to replace both the connector and the shaft. I had it done at Bosch back then. Shortly after, my "mechanic friend" told me that it's definitely something you can do yourself, and that replacing the shaft is often not necessary." Wait again until the pump experts respond!

Okay, usually, all you need to do is get a gasket set and the correct sleeve.
You can simply unscrew the lid, detach the spring, and then use a punch to push the shaft out of the sleeve.
Remove the old sleeve with a suitable tool or similar method, and then press in a new one.
Replace the shaft seal (deburr the shaft beforehand if necessary), and then reassemble everything in reverse order.
The mold for the lid is included in the VW set.
Any questions?

That sounds pretty good so far. Is there anything else I should be aware of (I suppose cleanliness is paramount)? My 'DIY' guide explicitly advises against opening the pump. I'm not usually very picky, but in this case, I'd prefer to get as much insurance coverage as possible.

Regards,
Chris.

Get the gasket set, possibly at a cheaper price from Bosch, and then get started. You can do it.

I spoke with Bosch today. The repair kit costs 23 euros and includes a new bearing, a new shaft, 2 seals, and some sealant. The guy said that the total labor time is about one hour. So, I just left my car there and I can pick it up tomorrow evening. The offer was simply too tempting (especially with no apparent risk), and I can better utilize my time (I'm not just working on cars icon_wink.gif; see www.fingers-welt.de).

Thank you all for your help.

Chris.

Great!

I just realized now that you're the one.

For you, the pump shouldn't actually be a problem at all icon_smile.gif.

"...why don't you try building one of those ESP guitars? I'd love to read a report about it on your website! It's a really great website!" Keep it up (what's coffee machine number 2 doing?).

Hi,

There are usually smaller updates, almost every weekend. For the bigger things, we also have a newsletter (link on the homepage). But to stay on topic: my car is running again icon_wink.gif. I just need to deal with the diesel puddle in the driveway...

Hi,

I just need to deal with the diesel spill on the yard...

Surely, one could certainly repurpose the garden irrigation system for other uses, or not? icon_wink.gif

It's good that the system is running again. What were the total costs?

That's right, but the pump is currently drained due to the risk of freezing. I wonder if the system needs to be restarted icon_wink.gif. I've now tried using sand, detergent, and a little water.
The whole thing cost me 120 euros, including everything. That included a cleaning of the pump. Just the parts cost around 26 euros, including VAT. Well, I saved myself a morning of tinkering with diesel. It sounds a little different now when it's cold, but maybe I'm just imagining things. But it's working well again icon_wink.gif.

Hi,

Fingers.
