TDI Fuel Injection Pump: Mechanical Type

I was wondering if anyone here knows which vehicles were equipped with a mechanical fuel injection pump.
It is offered in Germany for the TDI model, but unfortunately at such inflated prices that it is unaffordable.
Okay, so far I've figured out that it was manufactured in Italy, it's a Bosch product, but I don't know if it's used in VW/Audi models or other vehicles. Does anyone know anything about it?
It's also important to consider the nozzles to be used. I'm planning to build a TDI engine into a Golf 1, but I don't want to deal with all the electrical complications!
