Hi!

As reported in another thread, my car (V6 TDI AFB) had an engine failure. It seems I'm going to have a replacement engine installed (with financial support from Audi).

Okay... my question is:

What does such an engine look like? I see a costly item on the quote called 'engine block.' I assume this refers to a rebuilt engine block with NEW cylinder heads, pistons, connecting rods, camshafts, and all the other small parts.

Is that correct?

If so... then such an engine should be almost like new in terms of performance and reliability.

Can/Is it allowed to modify/chip this part?

(The 'should' here isn't really legally binding, but rather a matter of common sense.)

Ultimately, the rest of the vehicle (and the powertrain) already has almost 130,000 km on it (especially the axles and the automatic transmission), and the stress from the 30 extra horsepower will also be transferred to these components (hopefully at least icon_wink.gif.

Tuning recommendations?

I think about ***... sometimes it's called the 'official tuning partner' of AUDI... but well, any other suggestions?

Regards,
Felix.

Hello,

I don't know how Audi handles it, but so far, an engine block has always been without cylinder heads – at least with other manufacturers. Regarding durability, you can assume that overhauled blocks are just as good as new ones – in one respect, even better: the material has already been 'seasoned' and is less likely to crack!
BMW used to use refurbished cylinder heads from their exchange program to build their rally engines, and that was precisely for that reason!

Hello Jürgen,

Here's the translation:

"The 1000 horsepower, 1500cc Formula 1 turbocharged engine from the 1980s was a four-cylinder engine derived from the BMW 1602. At the time, BMW was searching throughout Germany for cars with over 100,000 kilometers on the odometer in order to obtain engines that were particularly 'well-worn'."
