T3 Engine Swap: Which One Is Right?

As expected, the 1.6 TD (JX) engine in my parents' T3 gave up after 160,000 km!
Some people say it lasts longer or shorter, but regardless, a replacement engine is now needed. Unfortunately, converting to a TDI isn't an option due to the cost, although an AFN engine with its extended gearbox would be a great thing to have. But €6000 is quite a lot!
At Tornau Motoren in Oldenburg (www.motorersatzteile.de), a replacement engine costs €1020. The cylinder head is even new and manufactured in Germany. The engine comes with a one-year warranty without mileage restrictions.
All the attachments will be carried over from the old one, such as the ESP and turbo, etc.

A VW replacement engine costs more than double the price, approximately €2200. It comes with a two-year warranty. Many workshops swear by original VW engines because they are much better rebuilt, meaning they are practically brand new. However, with cheaper options, you never really know what parts have been replaced and what hasn't. (We once had a Mayer ATM 1.6D engine with 50 horsepower that only lasted about 60,000 km before it failed.)

As far as I know, you only get a 2-year warranty on the VW ATM if you have it installed by them. You're probably aware that this isn't exactly cheap.

I would convert it to a 1.9 TDI engine, even though it might cost more.

Okay, if you're already planning to replace the engine anyway, I would also look into getting an AFN engine. That will make the van a lot more fun to drive. However, it will probably break your gearbox next. But honestly, isn't €6000 too much? For that price, you're basically buying a running T4.
Otherwise, I'd suggest checking out the online auction site. You can find original T3 machines there at a relatively low price, but without any warranty! However, how long do you actually plan to keep driving the T3? If you can get a year of warranty for around €1000 from Oldenburg, then it might be worth it! It doesn't seem like a bad deal.

The AAZ conversion is cheaper and less complex compared to the 1Z/AHU or AFN engines. Perhaps you should do some research in that direction as well...
