Hallo, does anyone have a portable heater or experience with it? I haven't used one before, so I need some information. Isn't it true that when using a portable heater (turning it on about 30-40 minutes before driving), the water temperature rises to 60-70 degrees? How does this manifest itself? Does the engine block and oil themselves not get warm, or does the water gauge already reach 60/70 degrees at engine start, or does it only rise shortly afterwards?
It's about the fact that the SH is only intended for the interior in the new A3, according to Webasto (I did ask them about this via email), the coolant will also be heated (they say that as long as the interior warms up, you can be sure that the coolant will also be heated). But even after a running time of 40-50 minutes before starting, the water gauge doesn't move, I then always let the SH run further after starting, and after about 2 minutes the temperature is around 50-60 degrees, it reaches the operating temperature of 90 degrees after 3-5 minutes, without the SH, it takes much longer, but I always thought that with the SH, the engine is almost at operating temperature from the start

Hello Wacken,
I had a Webasto heating system installed retroactively in my A4 about 7 years ago.
In my SH, the primary loop of the cooling water is heated, and the water is pumped through both the internal heating exchanger and the engine block using a pump. Since the temperature sensor is directly attached to the engine block, it indicates the current temperature of the cooling water. This means that after about half an hour (depending on the outside temperature), the temperature reaches 70°C, and the space heater turns off until the temperature drops back to 60°C. Since the heat exchanger comes first, a relatively large amount of energy goes into the interior space, and initially, less energy goes into the engine block.
If I start the engine at cold temperatures (<-10°C), I also see that the coolant temperature initially drops, because the heat exchange with the engine is now supported by the water pump and therefore "more intense".
Just touch the engine block. It should be at least lukewarm, right? Of course, it's possible that the temperature sensor on the A3 is located somewhere else, and therefore the warm temperature of the coolant is only correctly displayed after the engine has started... or that your auxiliary heater has an extra circuit for the air conditioning unit.
That's the only solution: Open the hood and untangle the mess of hoses...
Greetings,
Ernst |

Normally, a water heating unit is always connected to the engine circuit. It is integrated into the supply line to the heating heat exchanger.
Theoretically, it is of course possible for a SH (presumably a heating system) to only heat the interior space, but for this to happen, one would need appropriate valves.
'It's best to turn on the heater and touch the engine block.'
I heated the water to approximately 70°C after about 30 minutes.
See you, Gremlin |

So, the engine block is also cold after 40-50 minutes of running the auxiliary heater, as are all the hoses. Only one hose is warm, which leads behind the engine towards the interior.

Please check if your additional water pump is working.
All the hoses should be the same size, (only those in the coolant circuit). B.Eng (FH) u. KFZ Meister

How do I check it?

Is everything cold (hoses, engine...), except for one direction, which is towards the interior. |

Hello...
Just check if your auxiliary water pump is working.
If it doesn't run, the heating system will immediately go into fault mode, i.e. Overheating.....
With a high degree of certainty, there are valves installed, if that is the case so that the engine does not get hot.
For example, such valves are found in the Sharan/Galaxy conversion kit when an auxiliary heater is installed (as a stationary heater).
Best regards, Thommi |
