Hello everyone,
I'm having a problem with the windshield wiper motor on the front of my Golf 3.
As soon as the key is in the ignition and I turn it to position 1, fuse number 5 (15 A) blows.
Here's what I've already done.
- Wiper motor is functional (operates on both speeds when connected directly to the battery, connecting the wires to terminals 31 and either 53 or 53b).
- If I disconnect the wiper motor, the fuse doesn't blow. (The rear window wiper and washer system are working perfectly; they are connected to the same fuse).
- Measurements of the voltages at the wiper motor connector show correct voltages, i.e., the battery voltage at each individual contact. Terminals 53 and 53b respond correctly to the selected level on the steering wheel.
- I haven't measured the relay yet.
I'm completely stumped now. Does anyone have any ideas about what I can try, or where the problem might be?
Can the wiring be faulty if the correct voltages are reaching the connector?
Could this be related to the horn, which is also connected to the fuse but isn't working?
Best regards, Sven.
'By the way, does anyone have any idea what the extra connector is for that's located near the windshield wiper motor? It has two terminals, it's black, and it has a clamping mechanism. However, there's no corresponding connection point, as the cable is quite short. Could it be for some kind of additional equipment?'

Hi,
My suggestion would be a relay or a switch.
Regarding the plug: Perhaps it's the connection for heated washing nozzles?
Best regards,

Thank you, Jan, for your reply.
If it's the switch or the relay, then shouldn't I be measuring the wrong voltages at the wiper motor connector? Or am I mistaken?
A colleague suggested that I measure the current draw at each individual component, or directly at the fuse box, to see how much current is flowing when the windshield wiper motor is disconnected. This shouldn't be too high, as the fuse wouldn't trip in that case.
The windshield wiper motor is certainly the biggest consumer of electricity.
Best regards, Sven.
