Hello,

I've already been diligently reading and using the search function for a week.
abused. This isn't a Q&A session, but rather a post about self-awareness.
For other troubleshooters... once upon a time...

My AEL (yes, the one that suddenly had a five-piece camshaft in 2003 thanks to VAG).
(Cheap tension rollers) Well, he hasn't been doing so well lately, and he's been feeling quite down.
'After the repair, using new nozzles, it still does.'

OK... TOP1 I once removed the K&N air filter, and the last cleaning was in the spring of 2004.
The number of insect generations that could be statistically determined was correspondingly high.
Autumn leaves from 2004, 2005, 2006 icon_redface.gif. Yes, it's totally dirty, and I've installed a new, original filter.

--> TEST DRIVE icon_eek.gif that wasn't it, no change.

TOP2 Eagerly reading the forum...while I suspect that ESD is telling them about the 340Nm.
It might be asking for too much. Perhaps the atomization isn't as good anymore?
So, I found information about boost pressure problems and smoke emissions in this crazy forum.

Ouch - my thought - the turbo already has 220,000 km on it. That could be expensive.
And I've already mentally cleaned the VTG (it does have one, right?), as it's supposed to be quite a dirty one.
To be a mess.

TOP3 Under my diesel driver persona, the constant question of performance loss, without log data, was a recurring issue.
So, I ordered an LDA (which is still on its way via mail).
mich seelisch und moralisch auf den Kauf der VAG-COM eingestellt. It's a good idea anyway.

TOP4 Just before pressing the order button, I thought to myself: 'Go check the garage.'
and take a look at all the visible pressure and vacuum hoses.
Taking the opportunity, I cleaned and re-oiled the K&N air filter (it's already lasted 160,000 km), and put it back in – who knows how much longer it will last...

Okay, so I'm removing the bulky plastic cover and the plastic tube from the air intake.
disconnected from the radiator. icon_eek.gif Why was the bottom part oily? icon_confused.gif

http://people.freenet.de/kmrlange/Druckschlauch_1.jpg
Did I dig around like that last time?

And then I saw the hole in the pressure hose, which is connected to the intake manifold, right there in plain sight. Eureka!
http://people.freenet.de/kmrlange/Druckschlauch_2.jpg

Root cause analysis:
Marten bite? Possible. It's a lovely animal that didn't nibble from below - very sweet.
'Anyway, the inside of the hose doesn't look good at all. It's very porous. I almost think that...'
The hose is rotten from the inside. At least, an initial test with duct tape showed that...
Ruling upheld:
Nun feuert er wieder und demnächst mit einer LDA. Dann sieht man es gleich. I would like to order.
I'm going to replace both hoses at the same time. Unfortunately, they are very expensive.

Thank you for not helping me, and for providing so much information here.

Okay, here's the translation:

'Goodbye, Kai.'

P.S. Soon, a portion of my five-piece camshaft will be auctioned off icon_wink.gif, to commemorate the 3rd anniversary of the timing belt failure that occurred 40,000 km ago.

Here are a few comments:

(1) AEL and VTG? Damn, could I possibly get pregnant? (The AEL doesn't have a VTG.)

(2) 40,000 km in 3 years? You only drive a diesel car for fun icon_wink.gif.

Great, then I don't even need to clean the VTG icon_lol.gif. I thought it had one, unlike the AAT engine. So, what's the difference then, compared to the AAT? Since both engines, the AAT and the AEL, can be tuned with a chip for almost 50 Nm, there must be mechanical differences. This surprises me a bit. But you never stop learning.
My AAT came with a chip installed, just like the original AEL.

'Yes, driving this diesel as a Quattro is really fun, even with low mileage. Fortunately, I currently only have 20km to commute to work. When I bought the car, I was still driving a lot, about 1000km per week. Now, the small, former mountain race track is fun again for daily drives.'

Best regards, and good night, Kai.

Wow, that's mean...

Your AEL must have a wastegate turbo.

'Oh, what a lovely problem to have... I was also planning to start crawling around under the car.'
icon_cool.gif I was already afraid that I would dream of crushed intercoolers and leaks that were impossible to find in the middle of nowhere...

icon_arrow.gif I'm going to sleep really well now, icon_wink.gif Best regards, Kai.

Hi,

Small update: I've now replaced the upper pressure hose and everything is working fine again. The engine is no longer producing excessive smoke, and the full power is back. 1.1 bar.

The pressure hose is actually corroded from the inside. The material at the point of failure is very porous, crumbly, and sooty, almost as if it had been singed with a lighter. Since the leak occurred at the top of the hose, I suspect that the noxious exhaust gases, which enter directly on the opposite side through the EGR valve, are the cause. A reaction of the rubber with oil from the turbo or MGE (presumably referring to a specific component) is also a possibility.
Regardless, pressure hoses don't last forever.

Best regards, kai.

"directly opposite" is good.

Based on the two pictures you showed me, it looks like there are 25 cm between them, meaning there are five cylinder outlets in between.

Hi!
'I had a puncture in the same spot on my inner tube about 15,000 km ago. While looking for a used inner tube at various scrap yards, I noticed that some of them also had holes in the same location.'
I think this area is under some stress, and therefore, after approximately 200,000 to 230,000 kilometers, a crack or weak point may develop.
'Currently, I'm experiencing an issue where the boost pressure doesn't reach 1 bar until 2800-2900 rpm, and then drops to around 0.85 bar until 4300 rpm.'
A few days ago, I deactivated the AGR (Audi's valve timing system) again (Audi reactivated it during the timing belt change), and I'm going to pressure test the air system to check for leaks.
Best regards, Martin.

Hello,

It's kind of a typical spot for a C4.

'VTG was never available on the C4; as far as I remember, even the Turbo AAT/AEL engines are identical!'

Best regards,

That's exactly where my hose ripped once.

It sounds like a disease.

'However, recently the symptoms have started to reappear. When accelerating quickly (e.g., overtaking), the engine briefly goes into limp mode.'

I hope I find the problem soon; it's really annoying.
