Hi.

I've taken my leaky seal outside.

Now I'm wondering where the crack is coming from, even though it's still sealed, and why the part failed at the other (barely visible) location.

Perhaps someone with experience can comment on this.

These are my first intake manifolds, AGRs (Exhaust Gas Recirculation systems), turbos, and manifolds that I am disassembling icon_wink.gif.

Hello,

You should keep one thing in mind: the exhaust manifold is a cast part and, relative to the possible screw forces, is quite rigid, just like your cylinder head (of the engine).

Every time you drive, the two parts heat up and then cool down again. Who or what can compensate for the differences in expansion?

"Your poor gasket. It may do its job frequently, but not forever. Depending on the fit of the surfaces and the macro- and micro-structure of the cast parts, they will expand and contract slightly differently. I claim that no two engines behave exactly the same in this regard. The gasket has to compensate for this, and eventually it will give up."

Best regards,
Christian.

Okay.

Then I will forgive poetry and send it into retirement.

The 4 young, highly flexible colleagues (seals) are already ready.

Actually, I was lucky that I took off the intake manifold for no particular reason, otherwise I wouldn't have noticed the leak.

For 170,000 km, is that considered "quite normal"???

First of all, thank you for all your pictures and contributions on this topic. Some time ago, I noticed a black, oily substance behind the engine block, near the exhaust manifold. It's not really a big problem, but I also suspect that something might be leaking from the exhaust manifold and could be a leak. What's the easiest way to check this?
Or is it ZKD after all?!
By the way, what's the problem if I use wget to mirror the images related to the exhaust manifolds?

Hi Gerbi,

Sure, you can download the images. Just keep in mind that it's a DSL connection (with only 128 kbit upstream).

I could also create a ZIP file containing all the images for the action, then you would only need one GET request (and not 3 `wget -r -np icon_smile.gif`)

Hi Martin,

I already downloaded the ZIP file containing the 2MP versions of the segmentation images the day before yesterday. Can you create a similar ZIP file for the other images as well?

If this puts too much strain on the upstream, I can gladly host it on my university webspace for a few weeks (until everyone has it icon_wink.gif). It has a 1 Gigabit/s internet connection icon_wink.gif.

Best regards,

Jan.

Sure.

He's coming tonight because I only have the pictures in 2 MP resolution at home (except for 2, which I unfortunately converted to the MemoryStick icon_evil.gif).

If I forget, remind me.
