Hello,

I had an engine replacement installed in my Golf III TDI 90 hp (MKB 1Z) last November.

Since the very beginning, the engine has had a faint metallic ticking sound. I initially suspected the lifters. However, the noise isn't louder when starting the engine, and it doesn't get quieter as the engine temperature or oil pressure increases. If I hold a screwdriver against each cylinder and put my ear to it, I think I can hear that the noise is coming from only one of the cylinders.

The engine supplier suggested that the engine should be inspected to check for any issues, as it might be experiencing problems due to insufficient oil supply at the beginning. However, I doubt that's the case, because the person who installed it (a retired automotive master mechanic) didn't just pour oil in until it reached the 'full' mark on the dipstick. Instead, he measured it out precisely, and the amount that showed up as 'full' on the dipstick corresponded exactly to the specified amount. So, no air bubbles or anything else unwanted in the oil system.

And now I've read a thread where it's suggested that it could also be caused by the fuel injectors. If I ever want to reverse the direction of something, then I'll need new sets of seals for it, right?

Is there anyone nearby, perhaps in the Ulm, Munich, or Stuttgart area, who is handy with tools and could help me out with this (for a reasonable fee, of course)?

Best regards.
Oliver.

What exactly was broken, and what parts were replaced?

It was a major engine failure. While overtaking on the highway, there was a brief jolt, a loss of power, and 20 seconds later, a huge roar, followed by a wall of black smoke coming from the back. The engine then revved up uncontrollably and could only be stopped by stalling it.

The engine was replaced with a complete engine (rebuilt engine, cylinder head, new fuel injection pump, injectors, water pump, etc.) from the company Meyer-Motoren.

Also, back then, I also had the turbocharger replaced while the engine was already being removed. At 200,000 km, I thought it was a sensible preventative measure, especially since I was able to get the new part at a reasonable price.

Basically, everything is quite good. However, this metallic ticking sound bothers me. Compared to the old engine, it lacks a bit of top speed. And recently, there's been some coolant consumption. Although, the coolant loss could also be due to a different leak or a faulty radiator. The car is quite old, being a 1996 model.

Best regards.
Oliver.

How many kilometers has the engine been driven since then? New injectors often make a bit more noise initially, but this usually subsides after a certain mileage (~1000-5000 km).
