Hello,

'I logged the torque directly using VAG-COM on my AJM engine. According to VW, the AJM should have 285 Nm of torque, but the VAG-COM log shows a maximum torque of 320 Nm. Now the question: Is this level of torque variation typical for TDI engines, or is VAG-COM giving me incorrect readings?'

Best regards, Florian.

VAGCOM outputs the internal engine torque.

From that, you need to subtract the internal friction, etc., and then you will likely end up with an external motor torque of around 285.

Hi.

'Since you're already talking about it, how do I get that 'instant' torque?'

Yes, either as Ulf mentioned, which, however, involves the risk of having too many open factors.
The best way to measure this is naturally from the outside. The devices used for this are called test benches (there are certainly other ways, but those would likely require a lot of work and modifications).
This dynamometer will give you information about the actual performance of your vehicle. Check online to find the nearest one. Before you go, make sure they are knowledgeable about how to use it, because if mistakes are made when setting up the measurement software, your Golf (presumably referring to a specific model) could quickly reach 140 horsepower. The choice of gear during the test is crucial, as the engine speeds that are reached are important. The gear ratio needs to be taken into account to avoid calculation errors. Also, the dynamometer needs to be calibrated for its location (altitude). After that, everything should be fine.
But don't expect too much; let's assume that the AJM might scatter around 5-10% at most. And to have that in writing, I think it's unnecessary to spend 50€ or more.
Why don't you try Ulf's power calculator? It can give you some initial insights into the performance of your engine. You already have VAG COM, right?

Matthias.

'In my vehicle, some torque is already displayed at idle. When you create a log file, simply subtract this 'idle torque' from all the measured values.'
In my case, I got a value that was very close to the specified torque.

In which fields can I search for torque?
or is this specific to a particular engine control unit?

Only applicable to PD engines with EDC-16 or later EDC-15P control units.

'However, the displayed values are more or less useless because they show you the calculated internal motor torque. You then have to subtract everything the motor needs for itself. How much that is, only the gods know...'

Hello.

'I have to chime in here and add a bit of confusion to the mix. My Passat, with the 'AJM' engine type, shows a torque of 316 Nm according to Vag-Com. A colleague's Bora, with the 'ATJ' engine type, also shows a torque of 316 Nm. The Passat is supposed to have 285 Nm of torque, while the Bora should have 315 Nm. My Passat has a 5-speed transmission and was manufactured in 1999, while the Bora has a 6-speed transmission and was manufactured in 2000. Both vehicles have roughly the same acceleration. The Passat is slightly slower when starting due to the 5-speed gearing, while the Bora is slightly quicker when starting due to the 6-speed gearing. Does the Passat have too much torque, or does the Bora have too little? I'm having trouble understanding the theory about internal and external torque after this experiment.'
