What are your thoughts on using sealant for turbochargers?

Hi.

Now that my 1Z engine is running again, I just diagnosed a leaky turbocharger on a colleague's JX (T3 Bus).

The part looks slightly different from the 1Z model, and it seems to be leaking on the exhaust pressure side, somewhere between the oil lines in the middle and the exhaust turbine. There are also some kind of mounting plates there, each held in place with two screws, attaching something to something else.

Now, there are such gasket sets available (e.g., on eBay) specifically for the KKK turbocharger of the JX.

Is it worth getting such a sentence and having the turbo removed, or are we just going to ruin it even more?

See, for example, here: http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=61310&item=7926723996&rd=1

"Thank you."

Hello Dieselmartin,

'In the JX models, it used to be a K24 turbocharger from KKK (a heavy-duty series) that could still be disassembled and rebuilt with relatively simple methods. Also, the complete bearing assembly with the shaft wasn't balanced as a unit. Instead, the rotating parts (compressor wheel, turbine with shaft, etc.) were balanced individually before assembly. In short: If the turbine shaft doesn't have any damage to the bearing surfaces, you can use this repair kit from eBay (which is more than just a gasket set) to rebuild the turbocharger at a reasonable price.' Before you do that, however, you should first obtain the necessary tightening torques (e.g., from a turbocharger supplier).
The new generations of TDI turbochargers, whether from KKK or Garrett, have what's called a balancing weight. Once disassembled, that balancing weight is lost. You'll hardly be able to avoid buying a used (or new) tipper truck here.

Best regards from Sepp.

Thank you, Sepp.

Here's another picture (warning, it's 600 KB in size) showing where the turbo is leaking.
