Engine Cleaning: PD TDI with Steam Cleaner?

Since I'm planning to try and unscrew something on my Bora soon (to check the NW position), I'm wondering how water-resistant the engine and other components are – it could actually use a good engine wash.

With my 1986 Passat, I would occasionally use a steam cleaner to verschandeln the engine, both after oil changes and at other times - and it handled it without any problems. Of course, I know that this isn't necessarily the case for every car; the Passat was just a robust vehicle.

Has anyone had negative experiences with engine cleaning?
Can I wash it with the engine cover removed? (It tends to be particularly dusty and a bit oily there.)
Are there any delicate parts that I should be more careful with (alternator, etc.)?

I also gave my AWX a thorough cleaning in the summer. I don't like it when dirt and grime accumulate in the engine compartment. Nobody enjoys working on it when it's like that.

Removing the engine cover is straightforward. Use a degreaser, let it sit for a while (5-10 minutes, depending on the product instructions!), and then rinse it off with cold water.

I would advise being very careful around the connectors and generator, otherwise you might force water in. The engine compartment is splash-proof, but not waterproof.

If possible, disconnect the connectors and then dry them with compressed air. However, this is not mandatory.

Using compressed air to dry things is definitely a good idea!

I would cover the fuel tank, battery, and brake fluid reservoir, and then work with low water pressure and as much distance as possible from the engine and other components.

I've never had a motor wash done on any of my vehicles.
Why all of this?
If you start 'tinkering' around like that, you're bound to get dirty fingers anyway!
