Hello everyone,
I have a general question regarding the oil for the AMF 1.4 TDI engine. I bought the car used a year ago. Before that, a 60,000 km service with an oil change was performed. According to the note in the engine compartment, 0W30 oil was added.
During the last inspection at 75,000 km, an oil change was also performed. Now, before the next inspection, I want to save a little money on the oil and buy it myself. Now comes the crucial question: which oil do I need for the AMF?
According to the technical specifications, the engine requires oil that meets the VW standard 50501, while the 0W30 oil meets the 50601 standard. I don't know what type of oil is currently in the engine because I couldn't find a label in the engine compartment. Unfortunately, the invoice for the last inspection only lists 'MOB1 Rally.'
Late at night, I'm wondering if I really have to use oil with the specification 50601 in this car, even though it doesn't officially have a 'longlife' approval...
Is it therefore advisable to continue using 0W30 oil, which was likely used previously, or to switch to 5W40 oil, as specified in the owner's manual?
Thank you & greetings.

Does the AMF not have long-life approval? Weird...
Normally, 50601 is used for vehicles requiring longlife oil, while 50501 is used for vehicles not requiring longlife oil. What does the service book say? Were the last inspections always done at 15,000 km intervals?

AMF definitely does not have an LL. And manufacturer's instructions and guidelines probably have a purpose...
50501 and good.
Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

Sure.
I only became aware of the specification at the time because of the 0W30 oil that was filled during the initial inspection.
When I search for oils that meet the 505.01 standard from common oil manufacturers, I usually find that 5W-40 is recommended.
That's why I'm now asking a more precisely worded question: Should I use 0W30 or 5W40 oil in this engine?
Thank you & greetings.

ps: yes, change them every 15,000 km.

If you want to save money, I think you should do the oil change yourself. Nowadays, there are 0W30 oils available from other brands as well, so you don't always have to buy Castrol or Mobil. Carjack offers the oil for around €45 (5 liters), which is €35 less.
I hope I'm allowed to mention the company names now. If not, sorry.

If you've been using 0W30 oil so far, I would stick with it; the cost difference isn't that significant.

There is no 0W30 oil that meets the 50501 standard, so your question about which oil is better for the engine is no longer relevant. It seems like you might have been put the wrong kind of oil in before... Audi A3 Sportback [8PA], 2.0 TDI CR [CFGB], STH mit FB

I've had the best experiences with the POWEROIL oil that is approved according to VW standard 505 01. You can find it in supermarkets (e.g., Schleckerland in Ehingen), and it's very cheap, costing around 4 EUR per 1-liter canister. Most Andere 505 01 products cost more than 12 EUR per liter.
I always bring the oil with me to the VW dealer for the oil change and take the used oil back with me. I then take the used oil to the supermarket where I bought the oil.

Hello,
I always bring the oil with me to the VW dealer for the oil change and take the used oil back with me. I then take the used oil to the supermarket where I bought the oil.
Similarly, I plan to do the same thing during my next service, because the oil costs pharmacy prices at VW...
The money saved can then be immediately invested in the timing belt replacement.
Greetings.
Florian.
