Solution: Drive more than 299,999 km! icon_razz.gif

This morning, I was quite surprised. My Golf reset! Instead of showing 300,000 km, it now shows 0 (or, as of now, 78 km). I would have thought that VW could count beyond 299,999 icon_lol.gif.

It's a shame, really. I always thought that having a high mileage reading on the speedometer was a good theft deterrent. Now I have a desirable new car! Who (a buyer, if there even are any) is ever going to believe that the odometer was reset from the factory?

Well, things happen!

Since VW specifies a car lifespan of 150,000 km, you have only slightly exceeded that value by an insignificant factor... icon_rolleyes.gif

That reminds me of a report I think I read in 'auto, motor & sport' about a Swiss man with a 5-series BMW. He was about to reach 300,000 kilometers on the odometer and wanted to capture the moment with a camera. However, he experienced the same thing as you did.
According to BMW, the odometers were programmed with a maximum lifespan of just under 300,000 kilometers.
My neighbor experienced the same issue with a similar 5-series car. However, his dealer sold him a completely new speedometer, claiming that it was defective.
I hadn't heard of this 'symptom' from VW before.

Best regards, D., who probably won't reach 300,000 kilometers with his Golf, as he's currently considering selling it.

Okay, drive a little more and let me know if you can repeat the trick!
Sell the speedometer as new on eBay and get a cheap one for just one euro to reset the mileage!

Full recognition for the achievement.

Or pity for the stinginess! icon_lol.gif
'But recently, I had a new A-Class for the weekend and was shocked at what you get for 20,800 EUR. So, I decided to let it creak and groan occasionally and continue driving my Golf. I also had an offer for a 100 HP diesel Meriva for 18,000 EUR. However, after seeing what a comparable Astra is worth after 3 years and 100,000 kilometers (approximately 7,000 EUR), I also decided not to go through with that.'

The Golf has never let me down on the road. However, this is also due to intensive preventative maintenance and repairs (and there have been quite a few annoying issues along the way).

My total car costs amount to 12.1 cents per kilometer with 35,000 kilometers driven per year and a 30% insurance rate. If you know of any station wagon (or other car) that would be cheaper to own and operate, please let me know.

Otherwise, I'm now approaching 100,000 km! icon_wink.gif

I completely agree with you.
Looking back, I should have replaced the ESP module on my 1Z.
... still, I'm satisfied with the 4! ... But there's a little bit of wistfulness in it.

Sure, here's the translation:

"So, variations."

I completely agree. Stay loyal to the car and conduct research studies to see what it's capable of.
I also believe that you can still get a great value from an older car, especially if you're very familiar with it. It's not necessarily about being cheap. I don't want to dwell on what I might lose on my Golf. It hasn't had any defects or problems so far, but I'm also paying a high price for it.

Matthias.

No, it then starts blinking:

STOP
Vehicle is aging.
Visit the workshop.

and after 3 days, the firmware will be deleted from all control units.

Hi,

Can you set the mileage on new VAG speedometers to any value below 100 km?

It would have been interesting to see if it would work within the range of 300,000 to 300,100, or if it's even possible to enter a value exceeding 300,000 kilometers.

Best regards,

Jan.

Um welchen Tacho handelte es sich denn? Motometer oder VDO? With/Without MFA?

If that's the case with Motometer and it doesn't require a MFA (Multi-Function Display), then I'll need to do it in two years.

@Jan6k:
The speedometers in G3&Co vehicles are not connected to the diagnostic system. Therefore, it is not possible to modify them using VAG-COM, even at speeds below 100 km/h.

Matthias

Exactly. That's just how it is, as they say. I know what's not 100% perfect about my car and can assess whether it affects its reliability or not. Everything has its pros and cons. And to be honest, I'd also prefer to have a nice, new Bora Variant. But you have to set priorities in life when money is tight.

@ Guste:
It's a VDO speedometer with Multifunction Display (MFA). It can be manipulated using software from 'Esel.' I once considered doing it, but I couldn't figure out how to simultaneously contact the three solder points that are located about 25 mm deep inside the speedometer's housing. So, I gave up on the idea.

So you know what you're currently worth:
Man hat mir aktuell als Inzahlungnahmepreis für meinen Golf 1.400 EUR geboten (sehr gepflegt, 1. Hand, accident-free).
I could practically give it away. But it still runs too well for that.

Here, please search for "Golf estate"!
Around the year 1400, there's no one to be found. But here in Austria (.at), while driving a diesel car is cheaper, the hardware (e.g., the car itself) is more expensive.

Best regards, Robert.
