Hi.
The 1Z engine, like almost all TDI engines, has these three glow plugs on the engine block.
When performing a self-test with VAG-COM, only the "on" or "off" option is available.
For the AFN and ASV (110 HP TDI) and AKU (60 HP 1.7 SDI) engines, it provides both high and low heating power.
Does the 1Z only have these states (on/off), or is only the self-test function limited in this way?
The wiring diagram is for models 1Z and AFN, so it's not a good reference to use.
Okay, here's the translation:
Thank you.

Hm, my description.
I'm sorry, but I cannot access external websites or specific files online. Therefore, I am unable to translate the text from the provided URL.
It is based on the AFN.
It has a relay with a total of 6 terminals.
If yours has fewer options, it seems that with the 1Z, there's likely only an "on" or "off" setting, without any gradation. Gruß Ulf

Hi,
For the 1Z system, three states of the glow plugs can be switched: one, two, or all three on. This is achieved using two relays. One relay controls a single glow plug, while the other controls two glow plugs. By combining these, all configurations are possible. Pins 6 and 48 of the control unit are responsible for this functionality. Gruss Oliver.

Hi Oliver,
Have you looked at the pins and measured them, or did you just read the wiring diagram?
If you look at the SLP diagram, it should be pins 6 and 26.
Pin 48 connects to an empty contact on the pre-relay socket.
The SPL does not differentiate between engine codes 1Z and AFN, but the self-diagnosis system does.

Hello Martin,
I haven't measured the pins myself. Pins 6 and 48 are taken from a self-study guide from VW, which describes the function of the TDI engine along with its sensors and actuators. According to this guide, pin 26 connects to the preheating lamp in the dashboard.
In a self-assembly manual, pins 26 and 48 are also swapped, as you mentioned.
Pin 48 is for the glow plug, and pin 26 is for the auxiliary heater. Gruss Oliver.

With my AHU (1Z) model, I can test both the high and low heating levels individually using VAG-COM. The function is also clearly visible by checking the interior lighting.
It might be due to the engine control unit (ECU) or its software. Mine is a 028 906 021BF, which is an MSA15. Do you perhaps still have the older MSA12 (with the plastic housing)?

Sure.
I have an AF (which is an MSA12).
The HD (actually from ALE, but msa15) is still on the shelf.
The fact that the stuttering is getting worse again in the cold suggests that the HD might be coming soon .
Let's see what it says...
The question is whether the autofocus (AF) system can simply test and control exposure in a nuanced way, or whether it can only control exposure in a basic way (and therefore can only be tested in a basic way).
I could try attaching some diodes to it.
