On my Bora (AJM; 09.1999), the headlight cleaning system is always activated whenever the lights are on and the windshield wipers and washer are used.
And that's without any delay.
I read somewhere about a 3-second delay, probably in newer models. Is this behavior changeable by replacing the relay or using VAG-COM?
Thank you very much, and best regards.
Stefan.

When the lights are turned on, the windshield washer system is automatically activated because there is no separate activation unit. In the case of xenon headlights, I believe it is even legally required (meaning not just the presence of the system, but also its automatic activation). In my car, you can briefly spray the windshield, and the windshield washer system still activates, but always with a slight delay, approximately the 3 seconds you described. I previously thought this was due to the design, as the arms have to extend from the bumper. I also thought it might be caused by the water pressure, which would explain the delay. However, I just listened carefully, and it seems the pump (which is quite loud) starts a little later.
I think there might be a different relay in my car, and I can't imagine it being related to the VAG Com system.

With the Passat, it's true that you can spray for about 3 seconds with the lights on without the headlight washer activating. It only turns on with longer spraying durations. This likely applies to halogen headlights as well.

The delay in the SWRA is intentionally caused by a relay.
@CheBu:
Are you the first owner of this car?
2) Please check if the SWRA (Streetlight Warning and Reporting System) is also active when the light is turned off.

Are you sure about that?
On our Golf 4 models without xenon headlights but with rain sensors, it seems that the rain sensor only activates when the windshield wiper lever is fully pressed. If the lever is only pressed slightly, I believe that only the windshield wiper operates. VW Golf III TDI Avenue, MKB 1Z, EZ96

Thank you for the information!
@ Julian :
1) Yes, original owner.
2) SWRA only in daylight.
The whole thing can be so annoying on longer trips that I sometimes pull over to the right to clean the windshield without using the lights. Otherwise, I have to refill the windshield washer fluid every 300 kilometers in the winter.
I suppose I don't need to ask my dealer, or do I...?
Best regards,
Stefan.

Then, simply connect the pump's plug for the greywater system to a switch inside the vehicle, and you can switch it on if desired. I also find the constant spraying annoying, but I believe the tank in the Golf holds about 5 liters (I'm not sure of the exact amount) and lasts quite a while.

My Golf also has a SWR. I was shocked last time that the 5-liter container was already empty again. } However, I didn't find any puddles under the car... The fluid comes out under quite a bit of pressure from all 4 nozzles. So, a high consumption seems to be normal??
It also takes a short moment for the rear window defroster to activate on my Golf. Maybe it's to build up pressure?

It's understandable that the power consumption is higher with 4 DPS units, but the power supply itself is also significantly larger, about 80% bigger.
Well, I don't use it that often, of course the consumption increases in the winter, but that's also because everything important is always kept nice and clean!
