Can someone help?
'On my 1993 B4 (engine code 1Z), the oil supply line to the turbocharger was defective. After that, a turbocharger noise developed (sounds like a vacuum cleaner motor with worn bearings, a loud grinding noise). Now my question: Has anyone ever installed a turbocharger from the 1994 model year onwards into an older 1Z engine? It's also a wastegate turbocharger. Would the turbocharger fit? It's supposed to provide earlier boost pressure, and the price is also lower.'
However, you won't achieve faster boost build-up with this, because the boost pressure is still regulated by the target boost curve, even with this turbocharger.
Furthermore, you wouldn't have experienced any boost in power because boost pressure alone doesn't generate additional power.
You could only take advantage of that benefit by modifying the engine's control unit (chip tuning).
But at least it would be cheaper, if it works out.
After my charger (1Z Passat) also failed, I installed one from an Audi A4.
While the installation wasn't great, the A4 charger is a bit bigger.
The difference was that the flange was rotated exactly 180 degrees relative to the exhaust manifold.
Unfortunately, I only noticed this during the installation of the charger. Due to time constraints (as I had work the next day), I had to attach the new charger using makeshift brackets. The slightly larger charger just barely fit.
What immediately caught my attention is that the engine is demonstrably and measurably producing more power than before.
Thank you!
Since I don't want to change anything other than a small €0.10 adjustment, the original version is probably the better choice, because for major modifications, I would first need to buy a laptop and a VAG diagnostic tool.
