hi,
I'd like to generally understand what reasons there might be if you can no longer reach the maximum speed (Vmax).
I'm not talking about things like wider tires, etc.
More likely a fuel filter or MAF sensor.
It's happening to me too. I can only manage a speed of 'just' 195 km/h on the same highway, according to my speedometer.
Car = 100 HP TDI PD engine. Registered top speed: 188 km/h.
I bought it in June 2002, and at that time it had 19,500 kilometers on the odometer. With the 225/45 17' tires, it was showing a speed of approximately 200 km/h according to the speedometer.
Today, with 54,800 km on the odometer, it's still running in the same condition, 'only' consuming 19.5 liters per 100 km. What could be the reason for this? The mass airflow sensor (MAF) is fine; its values have been tested and are within the expected range.
Could it be that the problem is with the fuel filter? I'm now at 60,000 km and having my first major service, where the fuel filter will be replaced for the first time.
Could it also be due to the air filter?
I would be very grateful for any response.
See ya.

Hi,
Did you measure the wind speed? A variation of plus or minus 5 km/h at maximum speed can be easily achieved with even a very slight breeze.
If your air filter is still the original one at 60,000 km (which is probably what the maintenance schedule recommends), then I'm not surprised - I had mine cleaned after 25,000 km and replaced after 45,000 km. Each time, there was a significant amount of dirt in it, especially fine dust that clogged the pores. Whether that would account for a 5 km/h difference, I don't know, but I think environmental conditions are more likely to be the cause.
Best regards,

I've had my air filter replaced once before, at around 30,000 kilometers. It ran better afterward. Well, we'll see. At the latest in March, when I have to go for an inspection, we'll know for sure.
Thank you.
