Hello.
"I've removed the ESD (Exhaust Silencer Device) and I wanted to drive around for a while before getting a new one. The ESD doesn't affect the volume on the 1Z engine, but the pipe from the MSD (Multiple Spark Discharge) ends right next to the fuel tank, which is made of plastic. How hot do the exhaust gases get? Is there a risk of something starting to melt?"

I wouldn't do it.
You have absolutely no control over what might be happening under your tractor. Eventually, you'll come to a stop because the tank is empty, and you'll have left a trail of oil all over the road for the last few kilometers.
If you're going to do it, then at least use a replacement pipe – but building and attaching that is probably more complicated than just buying a new exhaust system.

Why did that one fail? My ESD is turning 9 years old tomorrow and is still working fine!

Hello Jan,
Ideally, there should be a thin aluminum foil component between the exhaust and the underbody; it's called a heat shield.
I recently drove for over three weeks without an ESD - nothing burned out.
Best regards, Rudi.
edit:
@Martin
you were faster .
I've already installed the third ESD (Electronic Stability Device), although my car is only a few months old.
younger than yours.
This one will probably outlive the car now (thanks to the stainless steel) .

'Don't do that. I already tried that with my Passat once. Also, my EGR valve is faulty. I simply attached a 90-degree bend pointing downwards. Unfortunately, I lost it without realizing it. The result was that the underbody protection was as liquid as water and leaked out of the sill. Moreover, the brake force distributor was also in the way. The exhaust fumes heated the brake fluid so much that pressing the brake pedal did nothing. However, I must also say that this happened on the highway. If you're only driving around town, it should be somewhat okay... Still, be careful!'

Oops...
I guess I was lucky. The fracture was right at the MSD (most superior dorsal) and extended from there to...
The brake force limiter is still a component, which means that the heat is dissipated through the turbulence.
'It's been distributed quite well. The cavity preservation and underbody protection are still present.'
where they belong.
Best regards, Rudi.

I strongly advise against riding without an exhaust silencer.
We often see colleagues like that in the workshop... everything from melted underbody protection to rear bumpers in a 'Colani' design.
Extremely risky!

Brake force limiter ???
"Don't worry, my colleague 'Mark 20' is in the engine compartment and controlling it from there."
Rudi, if your tractor is newer, why doesn't it have ABS?
I thought that was already standard practice.
Nevertheless, I would avoid doing that without using an ESD-safe environment.

Hi Martin,
The ABS series was only available from model year '97 onwards. Mine was first registered in May '96 and only has the CL trim level .
Best regards, Rudi.

Well, I also thought this part would last forever. It still looks pretty good overall, except that the pipe is completely broken right at the front, near the exhaust manifold. But I believe this was the first exhaust manifold it had (the car was manufactured in 1994 and has 180,000 km).
I think I'll just skip that and not bother driving around looking for an ESD. I'll just buy a new one today, even though it's going to be twice as expensive (because the stores around here really inflate their prices).
Thank you very much for your help!
/Jan

Can't you just temporarily fix it for now? It doesn't have to be airtight, it just needs to hold together so that the main exhaust flow can pass through again...

mine is from June 1996, but according to the documents, it's a 1997 model year, and it doesn't have ABS yet .

Then it must have been an optional extra for my car.
EDIT: doppelwobber.de confirms: September '96 ABS for all.
I always thought that ABS was available from the facelift models produced in 1996.
Or maybe it was included in the "Europe" package.
I have a CL Vari Europe model with a few extra features.
He should really take a look at his exhaust pipe, because the rest of the exhaust system is already new (all of this just because of the flexible pipe... ). Transparency, Teamwork
