Hello everyone.
I happened to come across a 1.6 TD engine with an intercooler. I plan to install it in my T3. My biggest problem now is how the transmission and clutch will fit. Is it worth converting the 4-speed gearbox? Are there any TD conversions available for the VW 1.7L engine?

There was only a very limited number of 1.6L turbo diesel engines with an intercooler that were originally installed in the Jetta.
Unlike the standard 1.6 TD engine, this one has an additional water cooling system for the turbocharger (a hose runs from the front through the main bearing and then to a fitting at the rear of the engine block).
The head gasket of the standard 1.6 TD engine is typically a paper gasket and susceptible to failure with further performance enhancements. Considering that the engine in the T3 is subjected to even greater stress, installing an intercooler on a 1.6-liter engine not originally designed for it should be carefully considered.

To my knowledge, the 1.7D engine already has oil injection nozzles that spray oil onto the underside of the pistons for cooling. This is a prerequisite for turbocharging the engine; otherwise, there's a risk of the piston crowns burning through. There should also be "1.7 D/TD" written on the engine block.

The difference in gear ratios between the 5th and 4th gears (as the top gear) is quite small.
Gear letter code ---> Table (Bulliportal.de) ---->>> Compare.

The gearboxes are compatible and can handle the power output of engines with 82-85 horsepower (without increasing fuel injector pressure). The clutch may require a diameter of 210 mm.

Hi,

I have to disagree with Cetano.

The 80 hp TD LLK engine was available in the Golf, and likely also in the Jetta and Passat (35i models).

It's true that it has a water-cooled turbocharger and is prone to head gasket failures.

I can only recommend installing a liquid cooling system on the JX (the original TD engine in the bus). This will somewhat alleviate the thermal stress on the thermally heavily loaded JX.

I don't think it makes sense to completely overhaul the bus with an SB/RA engine (i.e., a full TD LLK motor).
You can easily get around 80 horsepower from a JX engine with additional performance parts.
- The engine is mounted at an angle in the bus, which can sometimes cause problems with the hydraulic lifters (the JX model doesn't have them, but the RA/SB models do).
- Whether the water-cooled turbo will fit in the available space inside the bus?
- The effort involved is disproportionate to the benefits.

By the way, both the JX and the earlier JR models (with a 70 hp TDI engine in the Golf) already had oil spray nozzles. Only the JP model (with a naturally aspirated diesel engine in the Golf) did not have them.

It's quite a risky undertaking to add a turbocharger to a KY engine (1.7 SD in a bus), because either you end up with an engine that doesn't officially exist (-> no approval certificate), or you have to get it registered through an individual inspection (-> expensive). Volkswagen never produced a 1.7 TD engine; the boring out of the block was only done for use in postal vehicles, to improve the performance of the otherwise underpowered 1.6 SD (CS) engine in the bus.

The installation of LED headlights on the JX can be registered (there are also complete kits with approval certificates available).

Okay, please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation.

'Well, that puts me one step closer. Where could I get an intercooler for the 1.7D engine? Then I would have a naturally aspirated diesel with an intercooler. And it's supposed to produce 80 horsepower?'
I'd really prefer a 1.9 TD engine in my van, but where am I supposed to get one without resorting to theft. A TDI engine is out of the question for me, as I don't want to deal with the engine control unit and all that stuff. It's enough trouble just having to repair things.

hi??

You've misunderstood something. The combination of a 1.7 diesel engine with a CVT transmission is the most pointless configuration you can get.

What do you want to cool down on a naturally aspirated diesel engine? It's already drawing in cold air.

Okay, after this clarification and rereading your post, I think I finally understand: you have a KY (presumably referring to a specific type of car or component), now you're considering an upgrade with either a RA/SB (likely another car part or system), and you're thinking about modifying it?
(it would be helpful if you wrote it that way too icon_wink.gif)

Unfortunately, it's difficult to upgrade the KY without running afoul of the law.
Technically, a turbocharger could be fitted to the KY engine, but who would want to do that?

There are plenty of 1.9 TDI engines (AAZ) available.

Enjoy your meal! / Have a good lunch!

Of the 1.6L VW TD engines, the ones with a standard liquid-cooled turbocharger (SB, RA) are the most durable, as far as I know.

"TDs without a driver's license often reach speeds of 200,000 to 250,000 (or even higher) in bus mode."
Head / Cylinder head damage.

The water-cooled turbo on the SB is not a necessity; it can also be used without water cooling.
In the T3 (JX) and Golf II TD, as well as the Passat 32B TD (JR), the Garrett turbocharger is typically used.
Install a T3 turbocharger or a similarly sized KKK turbocharger on the supercharged engine with water cooling, specifically for the 1.9L engine.
AAZ is a T2 or a comparable KKK; the T2 models have smaller turbines and are therefore quieter.
I started doing it much earlier; I had converted my JR from a T3 to a T2, and it was running at full boost pressure.
so that the starting value is 2000 instead of 2800.

a TD motor that originally did not have a low-voltage coil.
If the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) is adjusted accordingly, it's possible to achieve 80 horsepower even with a low-power engine.
If you want more performance, you can also increase the boost pressure and further adjust the ESP settings.
However, considering that the engine in the bus is already under a lot of stress, I don't think it's a good idea.

It also has hydraulic lifters.

More information regarding LLK (low-voltage electrical equipment) installations, etc., including possibly copies of documents and expert opinions related to LLKs, is available.

I can only confirm that. My car did get a new gasket at 270,000 km, but only because the head was already removed to drill out the exhaust manifold bolts. Regarding the engine itself: no issues. If it weren't for my friendly X5 icon_cry.gif, I would have definitely reached 300,000 km by now. And that with a fairly aggressive ESP setting and 100% load driving across Germany at night icon_twisted.gif.

Post15-02-2005, 14:49    Subject: 1.7TD Engine Swap: LLK & Oil Cooler Install Quote

Okay, now he's going crazy. In the spring, I'm going to install a complete 1.6TD engine with an intercooler in my van. The 1.7-liter engine will be removed and converted into a 1.7TD with an intercooler and probably an additional oil cooler. icon_biggrin.gif If necessary, it can also be done with individual registration. Does the 1.7-liter engine also have oil spray nozzles? If so, the conversion should definitely be possible; there's always a way. A mechanic whispered to me that I might need a different injection pump and that the head gasket needs to be thicker. Well, I'm curious to see how this develops. I will report back. 'Greetings from the North,' Ulf.

Electric pump:
You'll obviously need one with turbocharger enrichment, but in these conversions, the one from the standard diesel engine is usually used.

Head poetry??
Why? All the diesel engines in the Golf 2 have the same compression ratio, so it can't be a deliberate reduction in compression.

A Volkswagen dealer should be able to find this information in the parts catalog.
