Hi.
I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place; if not, please move it.
"So far, I've driven various Golf and Passat models with JR, RA, and AAZ engines, but because of my daily commute of 140km, mostly on the highway, I'm looking for a faster TDI."
I looked at and reserved a Passat Variant TDI with a 110hp AFN engine.
Is there a Pacific special edition model with 220,000 km, manufactured in June 1996, and equipped with air conditioning, being offered for €3,500?
I test drove it today and noticed that it emitted blue smoke for the first 2 kilometers, but after that, there was no more visible smoke.
The timing belt was replaced at 110,000 km, so it's overdue. Replacing it isn't a problem for me, except for the electronic adjustment of the fuel injection timing.
Now the question: The blue smoke is concerning. Is it possible to determine on-site what might be causing it?
"Can I buy this car? It looks great and is technically sound, but the excessive smoke bothers me. I've never driven a 4-cylinder TDI before."
It starts smoothly and doesn't jerk, either when it's cold or when it's warm.
"Our company's T4 van, which had an ACV TDI engine, experienced a similar issue, which was caused by an incorrectly adjusted fuel injection timing."
Thank you for the insightful answers.
Best regards, Rüdi.

Hello,
Blue smoke indicates burnt oil. In general, I would say avoid that car.
If you still want to go through the trouble of trying to stop the car from smoking, it's important to know where the oil is coming from before you buy it. A faulty head gasket might be manageable, but if the turbocharger is failing or, even worse, the cylinder head itself is damaged... see above. I wouldn't just flush 3500 euros down the toilet; I would carefully inspect the car to see what other problems might exist.

Hello,
After 2 kilometers, it starts to get warm enough that the engine oil (valve stems, piston rings, etc.) begins to burn.
Best regards,
Günther.

However, the smoking stops after 2 kilometers.

Hello,
It's quite strange, but apparently, for the first 2 kilometers, oil is entering the combustion chamber and producing 'blue smoke,' and then it stops.
Is it really so insignificant that it won't be noticed anymore?
Is there a part that seals when it gets warm?
Best regards,
Günther (now at a loss).

Hi.
I haven't been any smarter yet...
As I mentioned, our T4 exhibited a similar phenomenon after a cold start and during the first few kilometers, and, like many others in the T4 forum, it was caused by a misaligned fuel injection timing, resulting from the stretching of the timing belt.
Let's see, maybe more answers will come in later.
Best regards, Rüdi.

And what's to say that the Passat doesn't have the same problem?
Especially when the engine has already covered 110,000 km, making it "even more likely" that the timing has never been checked or adjusted?
Attach a VAS 1552 or VAGCOM, and the case should be clear . Gruß Ulf
