Hello fellow enthusiasts,

I am also currently learning a lot again... icon_wink.gif

Now, a specific question is bothering me.
"In the AXR engine, a different turbocharger was installed starting with a certain engine number. Mine has a Garrett 1749V (like the 96kW engine), while the later ones have a KKK (type not yet known). These turbochargers are very different from each other. The Garrett consists of a manifold and a turbocharger attached to it, while the KKK turbocharger is a complete turbo-manifold unit. Also, the KKK turbocharger appears to be significantly smaller."

My question is whether anyone has experience with whether both chargers are interchangeable.
From which year of manufacture was the KKK turbocharger used?

Hi Bertil,

According to my research, the switch from Garrett to KKK occurred in 2002.
In 2002, the MSG was also changed (old: 019 MQ, new: 019 AT), but not at the same time as the loader change; it happened later. icon_eek.gif

According to that, the KKK loader should be "operational" with both MSG models icon_question.gif.

EDIT:
I checked again.
The loader change occurred after the STG change!

"This should make the Garrett turbocharger compatible with both MSG models - but the KKK turbocharger probably will work too, because the load dump (LD) parameters likely haven't been changed significantly (if at all!) when switching to the new turbocharger, especially if they still match the parameters of the old turbocharger..."

I also had that information. However, the AXR model wasn't available until production month 02.
Mine is also a 02 model, but it has a Garrett turbocharger. The turbocharger must have been swapped in sometime later in the model year.

The 019 MQ is not a standard TCU (Transmission Control Unit) but the AT TCU for the 019 CR, which was only installed in vehicles manufactured in 09/01. Starting in 10/01, the 019 AT was already being used. However, the 019 AT is supposedly incompatible with the 019 CR/MQ (see also my previous information regarding the 019 CR).

Well, quite a few pieces of information don't seem to fit together.
But that's exactly the problem I'm currently facing.

Which one are you referring to with "mine"? The engine in the Golf, or the spare engine I just bought?

However, the 019 AT is supposed to be incompatible with the 019 CR/MQ (see also my brief information about the 019 CR).

Speculation: Perhaps the incompatibility doesn't relate to the charger itself, but to something else (e.g., WFS, CAN, etc.)?

Hi.
My AXR engine, manufactured in 03/2002, already has the KKK turbocharger. I know this because VW had already replaced the non-defective turbocharger with a new one icon_lol.gif. The entire 'large unit,' including the exhaust manifold with the 'integrated' turbocharger, was replaced. Therefore, the change must have occurred BEFORE 03/2002.

Ah, yes... that's already a narrowing down of the possibilities.

Judging by the vehicle identification numbers, the switchover happened approximately 400,000 units after mine. But when exactly was that?
"However, the ET catalog at the dealership lists 'MotorSTG 019 AT' for my car... but I had a '019 CR' which was replaced with a '019 MQ'... Things are getting increasingly unclear."

My 019CR model has also already been replaced by a 019MQ. So, this product was also discontinued in March 2002.

Huh???

According to the parts catalog, the 019CR was only installed up to vehicle identification number (VIN) 1J-2-100000, and only in 09/01. From 10/01 onwards, and for VINs starting with 1J-2-100001, the 019 AT was used. The KKK turbocharger was not used until much later in the vehicle production run.

What kind of cobbled-together car is that you have there? icon_wink.gif

Apparently, these specifications in the parts catalog are completely incorrect.

Hmmm, my Golf is from South Africa. The FGST number is 1J2U221nnn (I didn't want to post all the digits).
Perhaps they found some 'old' parts there and cobbled my car together from them. It definitely has the 019 MQ module in it. However, since this module was only used as a replacement for the 'jerky' control unit 019CR, I interpreted that it was replaced. The replacement must have happened with the previous owner (not the accident-free driving school car from the VAG dealer, you remember?).

It is definitely the 019 MQ inside.

That certainly means the KKK turbocharger will also work with my 019 MQ. In that case, Ulf is right, and I can be sure that the turbocharger from the spare engine will also fit on my machine.

But all this confusion with part numbers in the parts catalog can't be right. Then the 019 CR/MQ must have been used for a longer period.

I'm starting to suspect that the 019 MQ might have actually been produced in series. Recently, I encountered someone who had a 019 MQ in their car, and they claimed it was the original engine control unit. Their car was manufactured in March 2003. And now, again, someone else with a car manufactured in mid-March 2002, also with a 019 MQ. I don't understand this. According to all the documents I've seen, the AT should have followed the CR/MQ. The stated replacement timeframe is always 10/01 or vehicle identification number 1J-2-100001 (meaning early in March 2002).

However, this raises some very serious questions.
Currently, G4 Kombi models are delivered with the AXR engine and comply with the EU4 emissions standard. This is scheduled to be the case starting with model year 2003.
My AXR is only compatible with EU3/D4 standards because it supposedly doesn't support OBD2.
How is the OBD2 function implemented in the MJ03/04 models?
Do all AXR engines already have the OBD2 emissions control system?
If an MJ03 has the 019 Mq software installed and the EU4 is locked, then the control unit should have already had that functionality.

Hi Bertil,

Regarding emission standards, I can only add the following:
Sometimes, cars are faster than the regulations. My dad's Vectra (with the X20XEV engine) was registered in May 1997 and only met EU2 standards (as far as I know, EU3 didn't exist yet).
Once the standard was finalized, we had it approved by the EU in July 1997 with a simple letter from the manufacturer and a stamp indicating its official status.

Could it be the case with EU3/D4 vehicles that EU4 standards hadn't yet been fully implemented?

... there was another T.

I don't know what the f*ck it was.

That's probably correct, but then the vehicle would need to be unlockable with a key. However, supposedly it isn't!

The reason, incidentally, is quite simple. With EU4 vehicles, the "full throttle" aspect is eliminated during the emissions test, and the emissions test itself is cheaper. icon_smile.gif

Due to the visible confusion of Bertil, I then double-checked, as I had also started to suspect that I might have mixed something up. But (Bertil, I'm very sorry icon_wink.gif), it is indeed the 019 MQ in my 03/02 model. So, there was no mistake on my part (rather, the suspicion that my boat was actually pieced together from leftover stock). Isn't the entire overproduction located in South Africa, where mine comes from? Perhaps that's why the confusion icon_question.gif.
It is also encrypted using EU3/D4.

Okay, let's talk about OBD-2 stuff:

Bertil, do you have access to an OBD-2 adapter, like an ELM232, or an adapter for a 5.x VAG-Com version? With that, it should be relatively quick to find out which OBD-2 PIDs the ECU supports. Knowing VAG, all of this is probably already built in. But no one wants to admit it... In 2 years, there will be documentation, and you'll be able to convert the Golf to EURO4!

I have no idea if my old car's internal KKL adapter (sorry Rainer) is OBD2 compatible. As far as I remember, it is. I haven't tried to see if it works with VAG COM 5.x yet. I'm still using a very old version, 303.1.
