Hi everyone,

I finally have a motor back in my car again. It's not the PD engine I was expecting, but the AFN engine instead. Now, here's my problem.
I have a chip installed from Digitec, which boosts the power to 140 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. When I accelerate hard, it produces a lot of gray smoke from the exhaust. I initially thought it might be a head gasket issue, but a mechanic told me it's likely due to the chip and isn't a major problem.
Is it really that bad?
Where does it come from?
Is the chip incorrectly programmed, or is this normal behavior?

Thank you and best regards.
Schnupfi.

lol, ask me if you want.. hehe.. maybe you have too little boost pressure.. because the amount of fuel used is also related to the amount of air burned.. but I doubt that's the case for you.. mine (which is chipped) also smokes a lot, but that's because my engine was one of the first AFN engines to be chipped, so back in 1996, they probably didn't really know what they were doing lol.

'Don't worry about it too much; it's just going to blow out eventually. You could try disconnecting the AGR valve; maybe that will reduce the blow-by. You could also try rerouting the hose that goes from the turbo to the camshaft valve, and plugging the hole in the turbo hose. These are things that can make the intake air warmer or reduce the oxygen content.'

Hi,
How do you get through the AU icon_question.gif?
Should I switch to a series system (or replace the control unit) beforehand, or are the emission limits during the inspection so high that there won't be any problems icon_question.gif?

Best regards, Rudi.

What does this have to do with the AU? I'm a huge fan, and I've been following it for 6 years.
'You just floor it once on the highway before the test, and then the inspector won't say anything about it.'
Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

'cu' is a Spanish abbreviation for 'con usted,' which means 'with you.' It is often used in online communication to indicate that the sender is available to chat or talk.

Here is an example of how 'cu' might be used in a conversation:

Person A: 'Hey, I'm bored. Want to chat?'
Person B: 'Cu!'

This means that Person B is available to chat with Person A.

'Cu' can also be used to indicate that the sender is thinking about the recipient. For example, if Person A is thinking about Person B, they might send a message that says, 'Cu.'

In general, 'cu' is a friendly and informal way to communicate with someone online.

Could you please explain that in more detail? I suspect that this might not be entirely correct, or that it won't help solve the Russia problem.

Actually, Rainer once set the rule that we should only write about things we are sure are correct. Simply reposting things from other forums without even understanding the underlying meaning is, in my opinion, not great.

If you want to reduce the amount of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) entering the intake manifold, you need to block the EGR valve where it connects to the intake hose, redirect it elsewhere, and cover the resulting hole with a well-filtered air intake. This will draw in additional air, and the mass airflow sensor (MAF) will detect less air mass than is actually present, which will activate the EGR reduction system. This will, of course, also result in a loss of torque. Eventually, the vacuum in the intake manifold will become so high that even with the additional air intake, the MAF sensor will still register the maximum airflow. After all, it only processes data up to a certain limit.

Best regards, Georg.

Regarding the emissions test (AU), I can't say anything yet, as I've only had the engine running for 8 days. The chip was already installed when I bought it, and I don't need to have the emissions test done again until next year. I also checked with VW, and they said it's normal with a chip.
So, I'm going to keep smoking it :O).
'Thank you for the information anyway.'

Greetings.

'Of course, it's logical that I need to plug the hole, or otherwise, you'll suck in some debris, and the turbo will fail... I already explained how it works. The turbo sucks in more cold air because it's not drawing in the warm, vented air from the car. This means more oxygen molecules, which results in more air and less soot. The rest needs to be vented; where you vent it is up to you, either into a container in the car or directly to the ground.'

'An exhaust system will still provide some benefits even if you don't drive aggressively, because if you don't accelerate hard, exhaust gases won't be forced back into the engine. It's the same principle, same result.'

I don't quite understand your problem... everything seems to be fine.

Hello Napkin,

Disconnecting the AGR (Abgasrückführung): If there's excessive soot buildup at partial load, this might help. However, usually soot buildup occurs at full load, and the AGR is already closed in that situation anyway.

I understood that you only wanted to seal the hole in the intake manifold. You didn't mention anything about adding an additional air intake.
The amount of blow-by gases from the piston rings should not significantly contribute to the total volume of air being drawn in, especially if the piston rings are in good condition. Therefore, you can skip disconnecting the crankcase ventilation system and hoping for more fresh air through the air filter. Have you ever calculated the mass of air being drawn in per second at full load?

No offense, Georg.

Okay, I understand. My concern is also about the excess oil that's being expelled and then being sucked back in by the turbo, which is contaminating the intake pipes.

I at least have completely clean exhaust pipes thanks to the clamping.

otherwise, everything is fine icon_smile.gif.

Hello.
I'm experiencing the same problem with my A4 (81 kW). I have the powerbox from PSI, and the car is producing a lot of soot. I wrote an email to PSI, and they suggested that I install a sports air filter, which they believe would minimize the soot emissions. I'm going to try it next week, and I'll let you know if it works. icon_evil.gif

Nothing will change even if you put it in.

Post27-08-2002, 23:11    Subject: Biodiesel: Production, Benefits, and Uses Quote

Hi!

Of course, one should eliminate the causes of soot formation. However, if everything is in order and the soot cannot be controlled otherwise, there is an alternative: biodiesel!
However, the use of this method also has several disadvantages: Only newer vehicles, approximately from 1997 onwards, are approved for this, and Bosch does not provide any approval for its pumps. In this forum, you often read about various problems, even engine damage. For example, the diesel filter clogs up after a while and needs to be replaced. On the other hand, many people report problem-free, long-term use. The fact is that you have slightly less power/torque (which probably isn't a problem with a chip), and the fuel consumption increases slightly. However, it is somewhat cheaper.
I personally have added biodiesel, mixed at approximately 40%, to my fuel for about 70,000 kilometers. My car ran great with it, and I thought I was doing something good for the engine (that's what I saw in the advertisements). However, since I read about problems related to biodiesel, I now only use regular diesel.
The advantage is: NO RUSSIAN!

Best regards,
Uwe
