HI.

I've been wondering for a while why my 1Z doesn't seem to accelerate very well at the bottom end, while the newer PD TDIs (and the whole CR community) clearly signal that they're accelerating.

Rudi once posted a picture of the Russian keyboard layout for the 1Z... I'm still looking for it.

I would also be interested in seeing data from a VTG-VP-TDI engine (let's take the last one, the ASV) and a PD TDI engine (e.g., ASZ).

Because, in theory, the same data should be there, at least for the VP models, since they are very similar (I assume that not much has changed in terms of combustion geometry or engine displacement).

It's possible that a slightly higher amount of oil was allowed for better acceleration.

Can someone (==Rudi) shed some light on the matter icon_smile.gif?

Thank you.

Okay, I logged something the day before yesterday.

The truck is constantly making a loud "Russian border" noise while driving in city traffic.

Often, when accelerating from 1200 RPM, the Russian border (presumably referring to a speed limit or geographical boundary) is the limiting factor for more than 4 seconds.

Is this normal for a 1Z engine (because of the wastegate), or does it indicate that my turbo isn't performing as well as it should because it's old? It has noticeable play (perpendicular to the axis).

When you accelerate, you can really feel the kick when the Russian border opens.

Here is a sample excerpt:
(On the right, this is the minimum of (three values) - Russ)
If that value is 0, the Russian border was active.

Hello,

Here are the characteristic curves for engines 1Z, AFN, and AWX.

Regards,

Maciek.

Rudi has already posted the characteristic curve, especially with measurable parameters, for the 1Z, so thank you anyway.

I'm wondering if it's normal for a car driven at low RPMs, around 1500, to consume up to 4 mg/hour of fuel relative to the torque limit when driving near the Russian border.

That's at least 90 horsepower / 35.2 * 4 = 10 horsepower... or 202 Nm / 35.2 * 4 = 23 Nm.

Hi,

What do you mean by 'measurable quantities'? On the y-axis, you have the speed (RPM), on the x-axis, you have the mass flow rate (LMM) value, and in the table, you have the permissible injection amounts in units of 0.01 * mg/stroke.
Maybe your EGR valve is defective (I mean open icon_lol.gif), your mass airflow sensor is failing, or it could be the turbo.
Regarding my old AFN engine, I can say that it didn't experience any turbo lag, even with a high-mounted Russian turbocharger (essentially, a turbocharger with very little backpressure) and a closed EGR system. If the turbocharger boost pressure builds up...
Okay, so you can drive at the torque limit and it won't stall.
I think all this LMM (lambda measuring module) stuff is only needed in TDI engines to get the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system working properly.
I have also observed the increased oil consumption in some PD engines, especially in the new diesel BMWs.
Probably a compromise for improved responsiveness and acceleration. It just looks awful.
A Russian particulate filter would be useful for countering arguments against diesel engines.

Regards,

Maciek.
