Crankshaft/Camshaft Position Sensor Error P0016 (Solution)

Error code P0016 - Incorrect timing or P0016 Crankshaft/Camshaft Position Cylinder Bank 1 Sensor A Circuit Malfunction.

P0016 is a critical error code that indicates a problem with the valve timing. The crankshaft and camshaft positions are implausible, usually caused by a stretched timing chain, a loose timing belt, or defective tensioners for the timing chain or timing belt. Engines particularly affected include EA888 engines (1.8/2.0 TSI/TFSI) from the Golf 6 onwards, Audi A4 B8 models, and numerous TDI engines.

ACT IMMEDIATELY; if the camshaft timing relative to the crankshaft changes too much, the valves can hit the pistons, and the engine will be ruined.


What does P0016 mean?
The engine control unit compares the signals from the crankshaft sensor (G28) and the camshaft sensor (G40). If the signals deviate from each other by more than a defined tolerance value, the error code P0016 is set. This indicates a mechanical phase shift (TDI: see synchronization angle).


Typical symptoms:
- Engine check light is on.
- Rattling noises during cold start (chain rattle, approximately 1-3 seconds).
- Uneven engine running.
- Power loss.
- Increased fuel consumption.
- The engine is hard to start.
- For TDIs: White smoke during startup or idle, or a harsh knocking sound.
- In extreme cases: The engine may stop and fail to start again.
- In advanced stages, engine damage is a risk!


Most common causes:
- Timing chain stretched - the most common cause, especially in EA888 Gen 1/2 engines.
- Defective chain tensioner (oil pressure loss, broken locking mechanism) or defective timing belt tensioner.
- Faulty/carbonized variable valve timing (VVT) camshaft adjuster on TSI engine.
- Crankshaft sensor G28 is defective.
- Faulty camshaft sensor (G40).
- Wiring and electrical connections to the crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor.
- Lack of oil or contaminated oil in the TSI engine (can cause chain tensioner blockage).


Diagnosis with VCDS:
- Autoscan: Error code P0016 detected in the engine control unit (01 - Engine).
- Measurement block 093 (TSI) or 004 (TDI): Check variable valve timing.
- Check the synchronization angle on the TDI engine.
- Phase angle between crankshaft and camshaft in TSI engines: Should be approximately 0-5°. Values greater than 8-10° indicate chain elongation.
- Check the engine noise during cold start: Rattling sound indicates a potential chain issue.
- Physically check the valve timing (using the OT mark).
