I'm already making sure that the "little one" (relatively) stays light.

Regarding the interior light, the one from the Passat W8 should also fit the base Polo. It has 2 reading lights, illuminated switches, and as a special feature, 2 red LEDs with ambient lighting for the center console. I can provide the part numbers if you need them.

Unfortunately, it definitely doesn't fit in the Highline.

However, running cables through the A-pillar and other such things seems like too much effort for the limited benefit it provides right now.

The LDA and a voltmeter are the priorities.

Well, the A-pillar can be "dealt with" quickly. Even with side airbags, it's manageable by removing the door seal and placing the cable directly behind it.
If the door seal is removed, a tensioning wire can also be used to run from the interior light across the roof to the top of the A-pillar.

I converted it myself in my Golf IV, and the most time-consuming part was building the adapter. However, I didn't want to cut the original connector, of course.
