Hello,
My Polo also fell backwards off the jack today, but with the wheels still attached.
I straightened the bent lifting arm again, but due to the extreme pressure during the "rolling off" over the side edge of the lifting arm, a piece of this rubber-like stone guard was torn off.
I initially covered the bare metal with an underbody sealant spray, but this relatively soft material will likely get pushed aside again when I jack up the car normally next time.
So, I could reapply the sealant each time – or repair the area with that rubber-like substance that comes from the factory. The latter would be much preferable for me.
Does anyone here know where to find this and how it's processed? Gruß Ulf

It's regular black Teroson adhesive, just in this particular container. It's applied using an 'air gun' at the factory, and also by professional workshops.
For home users, it's also available in spray cans, which are good for small repairs; you should apply several coats.

Für den Heimnutzer gibts das auch in Spraydosen, für so kleine Reparaturen auch gut, man sollte halt mehrere Lagen auftragen. |
Hmmm
The Teroson that I know (and have in spray cans) doesn't form a rubber-like layer that can be stretched to approximately twice its length before it tears... instead, it only adheres to the surface without having the "internal toughness" of the original coating.
It's also roughly the color of clay on the inside, while Teroson is black...
But if even workshops use "only" Teroson as a replacement for the factory coating, then I probably have to limit myself to that as well . Gruß Ulf

hello,
You should check with automotive accessory shops for sprayable body sealant. (I'm thinking of companies like Förch or Normfest, although that might be too much advertising.) I've had good experiences with it; the result is a rubbery substance. If appearance isn't critical, I think you can apply this stuff with a brush. If it's important, I can gladly provide the exact name (manufacturer and order number).
Best regards, Gerrit.

However, the jack will keep pushing this stuff away again and again.
After my first visit to the workshop with my current car (the car was less than 3 months old), they lifted it using a hydraulic lift *without* rubber pads. You can probably imagine what it looked like afterward. Everything was crushed down to the bare metal.
They also sprayed some professional-grade stuff on it back then (after I had already gotten everything dirty, the first comment was "it's nothing, it's galvanized," which almost made me explode).
The coating peeled off the first time I tried to apply it. Since then, I've been spraying a clear wax on after each "application," which has the advantage of preventing any unwanted buildup. The metal itself is still fine.

Hi Gerrit,
Thank you for the information.
I found a suitable website at www.normfest.de, but it doesn't list any distribution channels or products.
Do I find these parts at general auto parts stores, or do they have special distribution organizations? Gruß Ulf

I initially tried looking for it at local auto parts stores.
They don't have a standard color chart, but one person checked the Teroson color palette and found something labeled "Terolan light."
While it's technically marketed as a body sealant, the product description reads very similarly to that of the factory-installed stone chip protection.
I then bought a cartridge of the product, and indeed: after drying, the color and consistency are practically the same as the original material from the factory.
Let's see how this stuff behaves when the jack has to be used again... Gruß Ulf

Hi,
Besides the hydraulic jack, I always use a stable board that is 30x30 cm in size as a support under the car. So far, no underbody protection has ever come loose from it.
If something happens due to ground contact or other issues, I simply apply a thick layer of roofing bitumen (used for sealing roof felt). I usually have a bucket of it around, and if there's no rust underneath that stuff, then there never will be .
Kost also lau und reicht ewig das Zeug. Bei nem Neuwagen tuts aber trotzdem etwas weh Bitumen zu verwenden...
Best regards, Rainer.

It's already clear, but I was referring to the built-in jack and its few square centimeters of unpadded metal contact surface . Gruß Ulf

Hey everyone,
I'm risking being called a clueless newbie and getting flamed for using SDI and my rather unconventional repair method, but here's my solution.
My carpool companions have a habit of complaining about every bump in the road, no matter how often they've ridden in the car before.
Okay, so let's get to the point. I'm going with Hammerite, specifically the black version, although any color should probably work. Don't laugh, but it protects against rust, prevents the spread of any existing rust, and is actually quite durable, even against abrasion. But I think most people are familiar with the advertising for this product.
Best regards, BigB.

There is no effective way to combat rust other than replacing the affected parts. While products like Hammerite are decent, they only convert the rust into iron phosphate, which will continue to corrode over time. However, because of its thick consistency, Hammerite can sometimes mask the underlying corrosion, making it appear better than it actually is. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend using it for car repairs, sorry!
