VAG-COM adapter not getting power!

Hello,

I just bought a used Volkswagen Passat, model B5 (3B), manufactured in 1999.
When I connect the self-built adapter, which I have been using without any problems for over a year on my old '96 Passat (and other, also newer VAG vehicles), to the ODB interface in the center console and turn on the ignition, the first red LED does not light up - meaning: The adapter is not receiving power from the vehicle's side. The LED test in VAG-COM is successful, but during the adapter test, the software naturally displays "Interface not found or ready."

What could be the reason for this? The diagnostic port in a car probably isn't individually secured.

The +12V connection is also available between pin 4 and 16 on the connector located in the center console.
Even when the ignition is off...

A few days ago, I tried using the adapter to read data from an Audi 80 manufactured in 1994 (which has a 2x2 connector). The adapter was working at that time, but no data connection could be established: "Cannot sync baud rate." However, this shouldn't have damaged the adapter...

After a somewhat longer search, I have now found the error.

The contacts in the diagnostic socket (in the vehicle) were so widened that the adapter's connector could not make a reliable connection. Only when I plugged in the connector and then positioned it at an angle (a few degrees longitudinally), did the adapter receive power from the socket.

Regarding the cause of the widened contacts in the socket, I can only speculate, but it seems that a technician with little sensitivity may have been involved .

Out of curiosity, what kind of interface (manufacturer) do you use?

I'm using the self-built RS232 interface from Rainer's shop along with one of those blue USB-to-serial adapters (I don't remember exactly who makes them, but they work well with VAG-COM and I think they are also available for purchase in Rainer's shop).

Perhaps I will upgrade to the USB-HEX someday, if I need a batch for tax depreciation .
