Hi.

The oil separator in the Golf 5 and Passat 3C seems to be working very well - at least, that's what I can tell from the minimal amount of contamination on the intake pipe of the separator.

The only drawback of this part is:
Without airflow, it sucks air from the engine compartment.

The cooler for the G2 had rubber flaps that were sucked in by the fan, ensuring that only fresh air was drawn in.

What do you think about sealing the outlet of the oil separator with rubber lips?
Right where I can reach it with my hand.

Does it make sense?

I mean, usually, you need some kind of forward momentum to achieve great performance.

The only thing that comes to mind right now is when maneuvering while towing.

Once the engine is running, there should be sufficient (cool) fresh air available to make the turbocharger and intercooler's job easier.
And since static pressure isn't used either, I don't see any point in trying to force water into the engine with some makeshift contraption.

So, if there are problems with towing, I would be more worried that the clutch might fail quickly... well, it's a matter of opinion.

To be honest, Martin, I wouldn't change anything if there are no apparent problems, because the amount of water being splashed around in traffic on the highway, especially with additional rain, is significant.

Okay.

I'll let it go, but you seem to have misunderstood me somehow.

I don't want to completely seal the opening (where my hand goes in), but rather rubber flaps that close when stationary and then open due to the airflow.

All in all, it's probably just fine-tuning of decimal places... and the Passat has more important things to work on.
