Hello forum,
What about the suitability of timing tool kits for replacing the timing chain on PD engines? These kits are offered on online marketplaces starting from around €20, are they good quality or not? Some kits are missing the double-pin key, what dimensions are required for that?

I bought this stuff from the VW dealer. The lower part costs around 25€, the pen probably costs 5€, and the two-hole reamer is available from Hazet for about 10€.
When it comes to tools, I prefer to buy something good rather than a cheap imitation.

And for the pen, you can use the 6mm drill bit that you already have, and then everything will fit.

Does 'das untere' refer to the KW stop or the locating pin for the belt tensioner?
For the first item, the shop around the corner wanted over 100 euros from me because they only had it from Sauer...

The timing chain alignment tool usually comes with the timing chain kit anyway, so it's not worth buying, especially if you have the slightly newer tensioner. The lower part, which engages with the crankshaft sprocket, isn't worth 100 euros. The entire set from Hazet is significantly cheaper, and it's of good enough quality for 1000 timing chain replacements. After that, you probably won't want to do it anymore.

I actually didn't want to do it again after seeing that, apparently, the employees of Ravensburger Puzzleschmiede were allowed to choose the location for the right engine mount.
