Hello.
We have a Lupo 3L manufactured in 04.2001 with a mileage of 76,000 km. Yesterday, I performed the inspection for the first time myself, and when I removed the lower engine compartment cover, it was completely covered in oil.
The car has always been serviced at VW dealerships until now. I found some scratches on the oil pan – I suspect that was the work of the guys at VW.
Does anyone know about this problem and can help me?
Best regards, Hüso.

Hmm, your description is a bit vague, I would say. How am I supposed to guess where the oil could be coming from?

Yes, where does it come from?! You need to take a closer look and describe it. Does it come from below, or from way up high?!
I don't think you'll get a more precise answer than this... I'm sorry!

The problem is that everything was full of oil. I checked it out.
From what I could see, the oil level is already up to the turbocharger on the engine block, and some of the hoses are also full of oil.
Unfortunately, I wiped off the oil, but I will check again in a few days and take a picture then.
Oh yeah.
1. It is not lowered.
2. These scratches are distributed across the entire oil pan, including the side walls.
Best regards,

Okay! That's a good start! I would recommend checking the valve cover on the BACK side! It seems like there's a potential weak point that develops over time on the 1.4 TDI engines. At least, that's what I've seen in my own car and in two others I've looked at. From the front, nothing is visible, but there's a significant oil leak running down the back of the engine (and past the turbo), which causes everything to become sticky. In my case, carefully tightening the valve cover screws helped. Unfortunately, the gasket isn't available separately.
It's certainly strange where those scratches came from, but as long as there's no actual mechanical damage...
Best regards, brezelmann01.

Thank you very much, brezelmann01!
I just checked, but everything is dry. However, I discovered where the oil is coming from .
From the intercooler, a hose runs upwards back to the engine block (to a part whose name I don't know - I would call it an intake manifold (computer science student ) - perhaps the air mass sensor?). Oil is dripping down at the transition point where the hose connects to that part on the engine. I removed the hose once - it was full of oil. Can someone tell me how it gets there, whether this is completely normal, and if not, what can be done about it, and perhaps what that 'thing' is called?
I was wondering if it might be because too much oil was spilled in the past.
Best regards, Hüso.

hello,
This is a partially known issue with the 3L.
for your model year:
Normally, the hose should be securely fastened to the aluminum intake manifold with a hose clamp.
It might also be possible to connect it using a plug-in connector, depending on the engine code.
First, you need to know whether a hose clamp is already installed or not.
But the leak isn't the problem yet.
It's possible that it's just some oil on the crankshaft ventilation system.
However, it could also be a problem with the turbo. It seems to happen relatively often that the turbocharger develops a leak.
If the oil consumption is no more than 1 liter per 10,000 km, then the turbo is generally okay. If it's significantly more, then the turbo seal is likely broken.
Not the most pleasant news, but that's life.
If you drive a 3L car, then the forum www.2literauto.de will definitely be of interest to you.
greetings

Thank you very much!
You've been a great help to me - I didn't think anyone would respond. Our Lupo doesn't have a hose clamp, but a connector. I've now driven about 2000 km, and I haven't noticed any significant difference on the oil dipstick. The 3L forum is really great!
Best regards, Hüso.

Hi!
I've only just read the posts. I noticed the production date was 04/2001. You should probably file a complaint with VW as soon as possible, because after 2 years, the percentage of goodwill offered tends to decrease.
There are also dealers who still offer a 100% warranty/guarantee for up to two years.
Best regards, D.
