Probably the usual adapter issue: compatibility problems with your COM port, where VAGCOM is barely working under certain conditions.
If your adapter is simply wired and has optocouplers, it will likely only work on various COM ports due to random compatibility.
While it may be possible to build
inexpensive adapters that work with all sorts of COM ports, this is likely only possible without galvanic isolation between the car and the PC side.
"In my opinion, it's practically impossible to achieve separation without using trimmers on the adapter, or with a relatively complex circuit design."
