A colleague has a G3 AFN engine. At idle, the ribbed belt tensioner vibrates very loudly. At slightly higher RPMs, the vibration disappears. When it's vibrating, if you press on it with a screwdriver, it stops vibrating (dampening?). If you move the tensioner with pliers while the engine is off, it jumps abruptly.
Is it okay for it to make jerky movements, or should it move smoothly back and forth?
Can this wave be made more functional again? Would this solve the problem?
Should I replace the nib (round black container?)?
Or should we replace the entire mechanism?
The role has already been filled, but it hasn't had any positive consequences.
Thank you very much.

Replace the spacer (the black box behind the shaft), that's a good idea.
Also, sometimes it's a good idea to check the alternator's free-running speed (which is standard on AFN models).
I installed two span elements and two free-running elements in the last few days - you can definitely notice the difference!

To test the freewheel mechanism, I just need to turn the shaft, hold it in place, and the alternator should continue to spin freely? Or am I mistaken?
Thank you again for the quick response.

Sure,
Loosen the serpentine belt, put your hand on the pulley and turn it, then hold it. The alternator should then continue to spin (with a slight whirring sound).
If the cap on the freewheel is missing, please purchase a replacement, as it significantly protects the freewheel from contamination.

Hello,
I'm experiencing the exact same phenomenon! What is the part number of the spring element?
Greetings.
Reuselkopp.

hi!
I was wondering how much the spacer cost and whether it actually helped? Best regards, Peter.

"The freewheel on our alternator was defective (stuck). I tried to replace it, but I installed it backward and tightened it too much, which detached the alternator shaft. Now I've installed a new alternator and I still have the original VAG freewheel clutch for the AFN engine with air conditioning (120A) left over. This part cost 110 euros! However, I'd be happy to sell it for a lower price if anyone is interested (with original invoice, original packaging). After that, we replaced the tensioner, and everything worked perfectly again."
See you later.

Hi and thanks for the quick reply.
My washing machine was faulty once and had to be replaced. Did you replace the entire suspension element, or just the spring unit? Do you still have an idea of how much the suspension element cost?

I initially only replaced the casing, which cost about 70 euros, and then later I also replaced the arm because it was very stuck.
See you later.
