Tires & Approval: Part 1

Hi.

Thanks to the EU, there's nothing of real value left in the "vehicle registration document" anymore.
It says "205/55 R16 94V".
"Of course, that doesn't really match my factory-installed 17-inch alloy wheels."

The tires that come standard are "235/45 R17 97 W xl". However, there are also "235/45 R17 94W or Y" tires available (likely since 2009).

Am I right in assuming that I am allowed to drive that too?

At 215, they switched from 91/94 to 93/97, so now those poor drivers have to use 97 octane.

The best thing to do is to go to TÜV or DEKRA. They will enter your key numbers and then tell you what vehicles you are authorized to drive.

Do you have a 'European Conformity Certificate' in the vehicle documents? It lists all the possible tire and rim sizes that are approved.

On our side of the Sauer/Moselle, we don't have something like that .

Normally, everyone just drives the "Teil I" version, and they usually have different tires on anyway. It's crazy that the "Teil I" comes with the smallest tires, but even a moderate amount of factory-installed options already includes different tires.

Recall from TÜV NORD:
For my Passat (models 2.1 and 2.2), the tire size "235/45 R 17 94 V" is suitable.

I was surprised that "AFF" wasn't enough for him. Did VW again approve different BMR values for each vehicle?!?
