Hello,

Does the valve cover gasket actually need to be glued in, or is the rubber gasket permanently elastic (when changing the head gasket)? The repair manual mentions a sealant, AVM 17400401. The gasket seems to be glued to the cover, as it is not available separately.

Best regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

You have a PD engine with 80,000 km, and the head gasket already needs to be replaced icon_mad.gif. We have another case of this here in the forum icon_evil.gif. (I already gave you some tips further down, and I didn't know you had a PD engine). Unfortunately, I can't tell you anything about the VDD... we'll have to wait for Bertil, our PD head gasket expert number 1 icon_lol.gif.

Mine was replaced at just under 60,000 miles because it was slightly leaking. Now everything is perfectly sealed again...

Also, AJM (PD/85KW/MJ01).

Hi DaBibo,

That sounds interesting! Do you know by how many degrees the screws were tightened? I think there probably wasn't much room for adjustment icon_confused.gif.

Hi,

Christian is being really mean to me again today icon_cry.gif

But there's also something to laugh about for you again... (more details in the next volume of the AXR story icon_smile.gif).

Okay, I'm ready. Please provide the German text you want me to translate.

Since I didn't replace the timing chain tensioner myself due to the warranty, I can't say anything about the use of sealant on the variable valve timing (VVT) unit. For all 827 engines without variable valve timing, I'm not aware of any information regarding the use of sealant on the VVT unit.
Gruß Bertil

Okay, so here it is! The VDD (Valve Distribution Device) is vulcanized or glued to the valve cover. As a separate part, I don't believe it's available. So, you need a new valve cover including the gasket. I'm not entirely sure if the entire area around it is still sealed to the cylinder head using some kind of sealant, and the VW parts software (okay, I tricked you with the forum software!) doesn't provide any information on that.
I'm finally going to subscribe to Erwin (siehe Fehlerdatenbank) for my AWX. Maybe it will be more worthwhile!

The inspection invoice only states:

"Valve cover gasket tightened and cleaned - FREE", so they don't know how many.

According to the workshop, it sometimes happens. I should keep an eye on the seal for the next few kilometers, and if no oil leaks out, then it should be fine.

So far, it's been 2000 km since the incident, and I haven't seen any oil leaks, even though I drove about 300 km on the highway at full speed.

At least with the early TDI models, the gasket was very elastic: its purpose was to prevent sound from being transmitted through the valve cover.
Before installing a new lid, I would definitely try fitting the old one again, using a non-hardening sealant as a temporary measure.
