Hi,
Can one theoretically predict the maximum engine power of a 1Z engine if one sets a maximum boost pressure of 1.1 bar (relative) and optimizes the fuel injection amount to match the available air, such that it just doesn't produce visible soot?

Regards,
Jens.

Usw, etc.

In short, it can be calculated, and I'm sure there are some here who have a good "rule of thumb" formula for it. Unfortunately, I am not one of them icon_redface.gif.

Okay, I'd approach it like this: 1.1 bar is the boost pressure of the AFN. The standard engine has 110 horsepower, and I'm sure you can get a bit more with a tuning box, even without increasing the lambda sensor's operating range. I'm going to take a bit of a bold guess and say it's probably around 130 horsepower (with minimal smoke).

Perhaps someone with a suitable Pi*Thumb formula can provide a more accurate assessment.

Regards,
Guste.

I can confirm the approximately 130 horsepower using the measured 2.1 bar boost pressure and the calculated 120-130 horsepower based on the DZR (Dynamic Resonance Tuning) parameters.

My good old 1Z... now a colleague is driving it because he found the T4 AAB California too slow.

1.9 liters across 4 cylinders -> 0.475 liters per cylinder.

A boost pressure of 1.95 bar (absolute) results in 0.926 liters per cylinder.

Considering a fill level/packing density of 0.85, this results in 0.787 liters.

Since 1 cubic meter of air weighs 1.3 kg, this factor must also be taken into account.
which results in 1023 mg per cycle.

To make the smoking just barely tolerable, we'll assume a value of 1.1 for Lambda.
That would then be an air mass of 16, because at 14.5, we would have stoichiometric ratios (Lambda 1), corresponding to the theoretical air requirement for diesel fuel.

This then results in 63.93, which is 64 mg per cycle.

Now, you can calculate for yourselves what kind of performance you can expect with 64mg.

Hello,

Martin and Guste are doing quite well, although 130 horsepower is rather on the higher end, but that is probably more due to each of their personal definitions of "smoke-free." icon_cool.gif Personally, I think it is acceptable.

I can assure you that with an injection volume of 64mg per shot, as used in the example calculation, you won't be able to see the person behind you. 64mg per shot is sufficient for 180 horsepower or more.
@vwSchrauberViewing profile: vwSchrauber: Your assumed air mass value is unfortunately incorrect... it's more applicable to a chipped ARL engine.

Best regards, Rainer.

@Rainer: You're right, neither the pressure of 0.95 bar is reached at the rated speed, nor is a delivery rate of 0.85 achieved.
At 2000 RPM, the calculation makes more sense.

Would that be approximately 340 Nm?

Thanks, guys, that sounds pretty good so far.
What is the maximum boost pressure that the original 1Z engine can handle without damaging the turbocharger?

However, I use a KKK K14-6087, which is slightly larger.
I'm aiming for around 95 kW, but I'm not yet sure whether a boost pressure of 1.1 or 1.2 bar is necessary to achieve that.
The engine speed will initially be 3500 rpm, but the ESP's speed limiter unfortunately doesn't allow for anything higher. Let's see if we can do anything about that.

Regards,
Jens.
