Hello everyone,
I have a 1998 Volvo V70 TDI that is starting to have engine problems. With the help of this forum and the search function, I've already narrowed down some of the possible causes. However, before I start cleaning the fuel quantity control unit on my fuel injection pump, I'd like to find out if software like VAG-COM will work with my car. I didn't find anything useful about this in the search function, so perhaps someone can tell me what software and hardware I would need for that.
Thank you for your help.
Regards,
Ulrich.

Hello Ulrich,
Unfortunately, since your car is too old for OBD2 and is not an Audi, Seat, Skoda, or VW, VCDS cannot help you.
I seem to recall seeing some kind of special system for older Volvos online once.
Best regards, Rainer.

"Were the older Volvos with VW engines and corresponding engine control units not able to be read out using VAG-COM? Or am I misremembering something?"

No, I've failed before with an AEL derivative in a Volvo.
The engine was definitely an AEL, but it was installed transversely, and it had a Volvo marking on the timing belt cover. However, it was not possible to diagnose it using VCDS... unfortunately. selber schrauben - statt Werkstattpfusch

Thank you for your responses.
My Volvo already has an OBDII connector, so I was hoping I could access some data myself, but if that doesn't work, I'll probably have to go to the Bosch service center.
Regards,
Ulrich.

Unfortunately... The 16-pin OBD connector is already found on many vehicles, even though these are not yet compatible with OBDII or EOBD standards.
I suspect the connector was standardized because many people were already using it . selber schrauben - statt Werkstattpfusch

I used the Vol-FCR (Volvo fault code reader) software for my Volvo 850 TDI, manufactured in 1996.
It only works for the 850 and V70 models manufactured between 1996 and 1998.
Since these models likely don't have a "true" OBD2 system, it won't work with other software.
It should work for your V70, then.
Regards,
Holger.
