Hello everyone,
My mechanic just told me that Volvo also uses Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensors from Bosch, costing somewhere between 50 and 60 euros. It's just the sensor element itself, without the housing or tube, like with the DC-MAF sensor (Pierburg).
It's supposed to fit the 1.8T engine, but I'm not sure about the diesels. Maybe it will work with them too.
Does anyone have experience with Volvo or knows someone who does? I haven't found the part number yet.
best regards
Ronny.

Hi Ronny,
"Volvo spare parts at such low prices? I almost think it's a fairy tale. But if it's really true, then that's certainly very welcome news."
For which engine/vehicle is this mass airflow sensor intended to be used in the Volvo? Any information to help with further research would be helpful. Gruß Bertil

Hello Bertil,
Im Moment weiß ich leider noch nicht mehr. Ein Bekannter von meinem Schraubikus hat wieder jemanden der bei Bosch ist und der meinte er solle zu Volvo gehen. Done.
I suspect you can only find that part using the Bosch part number, and I have no idea which Volvo model it's used in.
'I also only know that the mass airflow sensor (MAF sensor) was supposed to be for a 1.8T engine. Unfortunately, I don't know if the same MAF sensor is used in a 1.8T as, for example, in my AFN engine. I was hoping someone here could help. It would be great if we could find a way to get the original Bosch MAF sensor for a reasonable price. The DC-MAF sensor from Pierburg isn't bad, but since the curve isn't quite right, it would be cool if we could find the original Bosch MAF sensor somewhere for cheap.'
By the way: Since the catalytic converter and EGR system were offline in my car, I didn't need a new mass airflow sensor anymore.
best regards
Ronny.

According to what I've read in Ulf's posts, the AFN engine still uses the old Pierburg mass airflow sensor. However, I might be mistaken. The fact is that the 1Z engine has the Pierburg mass airflow sensor, and mine has been working for almost 166,000 km (well, I haven't noticed any loss of power).
Best regards, WarLord.

The AFN is the one from Bosch. Take a look here: http://www.fzr-600.de/LMM/Lmm.jpg
The Pierburgs in the 1Z still work. It only started causing problems with Bosch...

That's not quite right.
This problem started and continues because, primarily, Audi is not adhering to the installation specifications.
For example, the new A4 model seems to be sucking all the road grime back into the radiator grille again...
etc. etc.
Furthermore, the old Pierburg sensor cannot detect rapid changes or backflows. The better a mass airflow sensor can do this, the better the boost pressure and mixture control. After all, you want torque .

no!
Not everyone! Ulf's tractor is the best example of how non-Bosch parts are also used in the AFN.

The Bosch arrived in the AFN only in 1997!
Fortunately, my Pierburg unit has now covered 220,000 km without any issues!

Manuel.

Does the 1Z model generally use the Pierburg component?
Then mine has already been running for 225,000 kilometers.

Okay, from what I've heard, it's already (the 1Z has a Pierburg throughout). I'm proud of the 1Z again, which is supposedly supposed to be so bad.
Best regards, WarLord.

It probably also depends on the vehicle type: My tractor is one of the last G3 models built, with a first registration date of 10/97 (at that time, I could have already ordered the G4), and it still has the one-piece Pierburg component. Gruß Ulf

The Bosch mass airflow sensor wasn't introduced in engines designed for longitudinal mounting until 1997!

Besides the water (spray), another problem is the control of the heating element in the mass airflow sensor (MAF). Normally, this heating element is supposed to "burn off" the measuring surface. That's why, in Germany, an additional heating element is often used via the engine control unit. Unfortunately, this doesn't always work reliably, and a layer of dirt gradually accumulates and bakes onto the sensor. This acts as an insulator, causing the MAF to display lower-than-actual values. In Sweden and other cold regions, VW only activates the MAF heating when the engine is running, which avoids this effect. I don't know why they don't do that here!
"On our T4, the second mass airflow sensor (MAF) failed at 86,000 km. It's only 30 cm after the air intake, so it's bound to get water in it occasionally, even with a modified air filter box."

Um, the well-known HFM5 hot film mass flow sensor doesn't have a self-cleaning function and is also far from the temperatures found there.
'However, Bosch has reacted and taken these issues into account in the successor model, the HFM6. For example, it features a completely different airflow design that ensures that dirt and water are separated cyclonically, and that oil mist does not reach the sensor element. The improvement factor compared to the HFM5 is reportedly over 600...'

@Gremlin:
Sounds interesting. Are the two LMMs compatible? It would be great if you could simply replace the LMM with the improved version...
best regards

Hello everyone,
A friend of mine once owned a Volvo V70 with a 2.5-liter turbodiesel engine.
I once took a close look at the LMM.
Based on its design (Bosch), it would fit into my AFN.
The only difference was the encoding from...
Plug-in connection.
To what extent does a difference exist compared to a 2.5-liter engine?
I can't say what would make it a 1.9.
